BOOTH LIBRARY STORYTIME
The Ballenger Teachers Center at Booth Library is once again holding children's storytimes Saturdays this fall for children ages 3 to 7 accompanied by parents. Storytimes start at 10 a.m., last about an hour, and will include both read-alouds and crafts. Dates for storytimes are Sept. 26; Oct. 3, 24 and 31; and Nov. 7 and 14.

UPCOMING NON-CREDIT COOKING CLASSES

Cookie Dough Swap Shop. Get all of your holiday baking done at once! Join us for the evening as we make eight types of dough for holiday cookies. This cooking class will be a team effort; at the end of the evening, you’ll have eight types of holiday cookies ready to take home, freeze and bake when you need them for upcoming holiday events. 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 30, Klehm Hall, Room 1411. Adults ages 18 and older are invited to participate in the class. The cost of the class is $40.

Mommy & Me Cooking Class. Kids ages 6 to 10, along with moms, are invited to join us in making four different types of cookies. Some of the cookie recipes will be baked and enjoyed by the chefs of the evening. 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, Klehm Hall, Room 1411. The cost of the class is $40.

All classes will be taught by Kathy Rhodes from the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. For more information or to register for the classes, call the School of Continuing Education at 581-5114.

SESAME STREET 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Help WEIU-TV and HitMix 88.9 WEIU-FM celebrate this momentous occasion! Sesame Street’s 40th Anniversary in Charleston's Kiwanis Park -- 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8!

The street running through Kiwanis Park will be officially named “Sesame Street,” with street signs on the light poles at each entrance of the park. Charleston Mayor John Inyart will read the proclamation at 2 p.m.

'ALMOST ALICE: NEW ILLUSTRATIONS OF WONDERLAND BY MAGGIE TAYLOR' AT TARBLE ARTS CENTER

"Almost Alice: New Illustrations of Wonderland by Maggie Taylor" is on exhibition Oct. 24 through Dec. 20 in the Tarble Arts Center Main Galleries/East.

These fantastic, surreal digital prints were made using sources ranging from snapshots to 19th-century daguerreotypes to illustrate the book "Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland: Illustrated By Maggie Taylor" (2008, Modernbook Gallery). Taylor holds a BA in philosophy from Yale University and an MFA in photography from the University of Florida. Her images are in numerous collections, including The Art Museum, Princeton University, and the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University. This exhibition was organized by the Samuel P. Harn Museum of Art, University of Florida. See here for more information.

WRITER/NOVELIST TIM O'BRIEN
Tim O’Brien will give a reading of his work during the third annual James Jones Lecture, scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in the Black Box Theater in the Doudna Fine Arts Center.

O'Brien has been hailed as “the best American writer of his generation” (San Francisco Chronicle). The author of eight books, he received the National Book Award in Fiction in 1979 for his novel "Going After Cacciato." In 2005, "The Things They Carried" was named by the New York Times as one of the 20 best books of the last quarter-century. It received the Chicago Tribune Heartland Award in fiction and was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. The French edition of "The Things They Carried" received the prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger, and the title story was selected by John Updike for inclusion in "The Best American Short Stories of the Century." "In the Lake of the Woods," published in 1994, was chosen by Time magazine as the best novel of that year. The book also received the James Fenimore Cooper Prize from the Society of American Historians and was selected as one of the 10 best books of the year by the New York Times. O’Brien’s other works include "If I Die in a Combat Zone," "Northern Lights," "Tomcat in Love" and "July, July." His short fiction, which received the National Magazine Award, has appeared in numerous journals, including The New Yorker, Atlantic, Esquire, Playboy and Harper’s.

18TH JAMES JONES LITERARY SOCIETY SYMPOSIUM -- NOV. 6 and 7
On Nov. 6 and 7, the College of Arts and Humanities and the departments of English and history, in conjunction with the James Jones Literary Society, will sponsor the 18th James Jones Literary Society Symposium. This year's symposium’s theme is “Memories of War.” Events begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in the Doudna Black Box Theater, where acclaimed writer Tim O’Brien will give the third annual James Jones Lecture. This will be followed by a book signing with O’Brien and with Kaylie Jones, author of the recently published "Lies My Mother Never Told Me."

Jones will give a reading, followed by a presentation by Thomas R. Jones Sr., author of "Lost Survivor," on Saturday, Nov. 7. Also on the schedule is a student panel, focusing on World War II memories in Japan and beyond, organized by Jinhee Lee of EIU’s History Department. The panel will include Febe Pamonag, history, Western Illinois University, as discussant.

All events, except those noted for JJLS members, are open to the public and free.

NEW EXHIBIT AT BOOTH LIBRARY
In recognition of National Nontraditional Student Week 2009 (Nov. 2-6), the School of Continuing Education has mounted an exhibit that pays tribute to the nontraditional students who attend Eastern Illinois University. The exhibit includes photographs of these students, as well as comments from them related to their EIU experiences.

In addition to the exhibit, the School of Continuing Education has planned several activities for the week. The schedule can be accessed here.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES: PILATES
There's no better way to boost your day than by taking part in a Pilates class. Join us from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Student Rec Center Aerobics Room. SRC instructors will lead a beginner's Pilates class, with tips on increasing the intensity if you're ready for a serious challenge. KID'S AFTERNOON OUT EVENT -- DEC. 5
Attention EIU faculty, staff and students: From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, the Education Scholars Program will host a Kid's Afternoon Out for children in grades pre-kindergarten through four. Have your child(ren), grandchild(ren) or other relatives spend an afternoon on campus with EIU teacher education candidates while you gain a few minutes during this hectic season to grade papers, Christmas shop or anything else you might need to do. It will be tons of fun with crafts, board games, movies, computer activities and more.

To register your child for this free event, send an e-mail to Doug Bower (djbower@eiu.edu), with the child's name and grade, and your name, phone number and e-mail. The deadline to register is Tuesday, Dec. 1; however, space is limited, so do not delay.

NOV. 11 OPEN HOUSE FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
The Office of Admissions will host an Open House for prospective students and their families on Nov. 11. While here, guests will have an opportunity to meet with faculty and/or student service personnel; hear from financial aid, housing and current EIU students; and tour campus, the residence halls and Greek Court. A complimentary lunch in one of the dining centers will be provided, as well.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. in Lantz Arena. Please welcome guests to our beautiful campus. Please note: This is a no ticket day.

BENEFIT FOR DENNIS DILTZ ON NOV. 18
Mark your calendars and plan to attend a great evening event to support a great cause. A benefit in honor of Dennis Diltz will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Charleston VFW. Diltz, a building service worker in the MLK Jr. Union, has been undergoing treatments for cancer and is unable to work.

A Longaberger, Celebrating Home and Pampered Chef Binga will be offered starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for Binga are $10/12 games, and can be purchased in advance. Early bird, intermission and black-out games will be sold at the door. A silent auction and bake sale will take place, as will a 50/50 raffle ($1 each or 6 for $5). (Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door.) Food will be offered for a free-will donation. All proceeds from this event will go to cover medical expenses.

EIU TO HOST VETERANS DAY COMMEMORATION CEREMONY AND 'CALL TO DUTY' CONCERT
A Veterans Day Commemoration Ceremony will take place Wednesday, Nov. 11, on the EIU campus. Community residents are invited to join a host of individuals and groups, including the Student Veterans of Eastern and other student, staff and faculty veterans, at 10:30 a.m. in front of Old Main. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be moved inside the building.

Lt. Col. Stephen Knotts, a faculty veteran, and Tyler Linder, an EIU student veteran, will be among those making remarks. EIU President Bill Perry is also scheduled to speak.

PANEL DISCUSSION: DORM ROOM START-UPS
The Dorm Room Start-ups panel discussion will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in Roberson Auditorium, Lumpkin Hall, Room 2030.

Hear the student body of EIU discuss what it really means to be a student entrepreneur, how to overcome the adverse business environment, and the steps you need to take to get your endeavor rolling. EIU LITERATURE CONFERENCE -- SHAKESPEARE
The annual EIU Literature Conference takes place on Nov. 12 and 13. This year's conference, "Re-encountering Shakespeare," features lectures, workshops and a university theater production of "The Tempest."

On Friday, Nov. 13, two lectures by distinguished and engaging visiting scholars are free and open to one and all in the Recital Hall, Doudna Fine Arts Center.

At 9 a.m., Alexandra Bennett of Northern Illinois University presents “Her Infinite Variety: The Women of Shakespeare’s World.” Bennett has brought her professional acting experience to classes, summer Shakespeare, workshops for school teachers and Elderhostel seminars. In each of these settings she has developed a following of grateful, enthusiastic and exhausted students.

At 10 a.m., Don-John Dugas of Kent State University presents “Popularizing, Purifying and Profiting from Shakespeare.” Dugas’s most recent book, "Marketing the Bard: Re-encountering Shakespeare and Print," was the subject of a lively hour-long interview on National Public Radio.

The conference is sponsored in part by a major grant from the Illinois Humanities Council.

NEW EXHIBIT AT BOOTH LIBRARY
The following new exhibit is on display at Booth Library: Re-encountering Shakespeare Through Film.

Located in the Booth Library Reference Hallway, 3000 Level North, Re-encountering Shakespeare Through Film celebrates motion pictures that explore Shakespearean comedies and tragedies. From the rollicking fun of “Kiss Me Kate” to the dark images of “A Thousand Acres,” films reveal the Bard in new and interesting ways. The exhibit, prepared by Janice Derr and Karen Whisler, will be on display through Nov. 20.
