Academic Advising
Upon admission to the School of Business, you are assigned an
academic advisor. The primary goal of the academic advisor is one of
advocate and liaison for you. Sessions with an advisor are required
prior to the next semester of classes. Academic advisors are aware of
and communicate to you the requirements and prerequisites for each business
major. Although course selection is an important part of advising, degree
requirements, career guidance, academic difficulties, and personal issues
may also be discussed. During the course of an advising appointment,
questions and concerns can be confidentially addressed and shared between
you and your advisor. Advisors are always available throughout the semester
to answer questions and provide support. Although you are ultimately
responsible for your own progress, your academic advisor is a valuable resource.
Building a relationship of trust between you and your academic advisor is
an integral factor in your success.
Your role in preparing for your advising appointment:
Make your appointment for advisement in person at the Student Center in
Lumpkin Hall 2051. You will be prompted to make your advisement appointment
through your EIU email account; always check your EIU email account for
this and other important information from the Student Center: .
Review your major requirements and come with a plan for the next semester.
Check the course
descriptions in the academic catalog to make sure that you meet the
necessary prerequisites for all classes before registering.
Convenient checklists are currently available for business majors to keep
track of their progress; please see the "Student Resources" section
below for links.
If you have completed 60 or more semester hours (business majors must
also be admitted to the School of Business), you are eligible to apply for
graduation, and you should apply at least one full year before you plan
to graduate. Applying for graduation ensures that your degree requirements
will be checked and you will be certified for graduation. Click
here for more details, and log onto PAWS
and apply.
If, for any reason, you realize you will be unable to keep your advisment
appointment, call 581-3528 to reschedule--only if absolutely necessary.
Remember, if you miss your appointment, you may not be able to reschedule
prior to your day to register.
For a convenient checklist for your major (.pdf), click the link below (checklists
based on 2007-2008 catalog). If you would like to modify and save the checklist
to keep track of the classes you have taken by semester and the grades you
received, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.0. To update to the latest
version of Acrobat Reader, click
