Oh, the places you can go . . .

China (Summer)
For the first time, the School of Business offers a Study Abroad Trip to China, the most populous country in the world. The trip is anticipated to leave June 27, 2010 and return July 19, 2010. Students will receive 3 business elective transfer credit hours. The trip entails instruction at EIU's partner university in Beijing, the University of International Business and Economics, one of China's premier institutions of higher education. In addition, we have arranged for a comprehensive program of company visits as well as sightseeing that includes the following world-renowned sights in and around Beijing:

The Great Wall

Tiananmen Square

Forbidden City

2008 Olympic Venues

Summer Palace

Palace of Heaven

Beijing Opera

Students will be housed in university apartments with A/C, TV and other amenities. After two weeks in Beijing, the trip will take the group on a 4-day trip to Shanghai on China's East Coast.

The trip cost estimate includes all tuition and fees, all transportation to/from China and to/from Shanghai, all accommodations, sightseeing and company visits, all meals on the trip to Shanghai, as well as visa and passport fees.

More information about the trip can be found at www.eiu.edu/~edabroad/programs/discoverychina.php, by clicking here for a .pdf flyer, and by contacting the trip leader, Dr. Marko Grünhagen, 4012 Lumpkin Hall, 581-6906, mgrunhagen@eiu.edu.

The Netherlands, International Business, Maastricht (Summer)
The School of Business encourages all students to include study abroad as part of their university education. Each year, EIU offers a variety of short-term study abroad programs that provide students an affordable opportunity to study in another country. For several years, School of Business faculty have taught a 4-week course, BUS 3200, The International Environment of Business, in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Through this course, EIU business students learn the cultural, political, social, and economic aspects of international business focusing on the European Union.

Panama (Spring Break)
Note: The spring break trip to Panama is full! We are still accepting applications. Students who submit applications on or after October 19, 2009, will be added to a waiting list. If openings for the trip become available, we will contact students on the waiting list in order by the date that their application was submitted.

During Spring Break in 2010, from March 12-21, the School of Business will offer an International Business course in Panama!  Students can receive credit for BUS 3200.  The course is led by Dr. David Boggs, Assistant Professor of Management, and Dr. Roann Kopel, Professor of Accounting, and is designed for undergraduate and graduate business students; it may also be suitable for students in related fields of study, such as foreign languages or international studies. Students will stay at the City of Knowledge, on the outskirts of Panama City, Panama, near the Panama Canal.  In Panama, students will be taught by Professors Boggs and Kopel; students will also hear from local professional and academic guest speakers.  Visits will be made to local businesses (e.g. banking, tourism, transportation, logistics, entrepreneurial) and institutions of administration, learning and government (e.g. Panama Canal Authority, environmental authority, universities). The course will provide general international business knowledge as well as focused information about emerging markets, Latin America, environmental issues, international banking and currency practices, and trade/transportation/logistics. In addition to classes held in Panama, multiple classes will be held at EIU before departure in preparation for the trip and upon return for concluding course activities. Please contact Dr. David Boggs if you are interested in the program (djboggs@eiu.edu or 217-581-8594).

Where will YOU go?

Why Business Majors Should Study Abroad
Never in the history of commerce has business been more global. In today's economy, your competitor, even for a small business, could be right around the corner or on the other side of the world. In what is truly a global economy, every business major should take advantage of opportunities to study abroad. Study abroad will broaden your horizons, stretch your mind, and sharpen your communication skills. Nothing will make you more sensitive to diversity issues than becoming a minority for a period of time. Even if you never leave the country again, you will become a better, more empathetic manager. Every aspect of business has international ramifications. Companies manage resources and personnel from a variety of cultures and countries, market their products to consumers from diverse backgrounds, raise funds internationally, increasingly report their results using international conventions, and source their operations in the most beneficial location. In a study abroad program, you will have the chance to see how American companies and their competitors operate in a global economy. The experience will have a profound impact on you, both personally and professionally.

Can I Afford to Study Abroad?
What you do in college is an investment in your future. Surveys indicate that graduates who have studied abroad secure more job offers, better job offers, and higher starting salaries in their fields. With findings like this, how can you afford NOT to study abroad? Moreover . . .

  • You can use financial aid to study abroad, and to even pay for your airfare!
  • There are lots of scholarships for study abroad, from EIU and beyond.
  • In some cases, it costs less to go abroad than it would to stay on campus!
