Employer provided autos
are a taxable benefit provided contractually to
some EIU employees. Retirement and FICA/Medicare are
deducted during the payroll process, but state and
federal taxes are not. The employee is responsible for
paying state and federal taxes. Travel from your domicile
to Eastern and vice versa is considered personal.
Insurance
Please note that the State plan does not
cover medical bills or personal injury claims for any
drivers or passengers in your employer-provided
automobile who are not Eastern Illinois University
employees on official business. This means that to be
covered in all circumstances, business and
personal, you need to purchase at a minimum the
state-required amount for liability insurance for this
vehicle. This type of coverage can generally be purchased
as an extension to your existing personal automobile
policy and is relatively inexpensive.
Trading Vehicles
All official courtesy car agreements are
currently completed by the Office of the Vice President
for Business Affairs and approved before the employee can
pick up the vehicle. When changing vehicles, contact the
Vice President for Business Affairs Office at extension
#2921 and please be prepared to furnish information
regarding both vehicles. You may also fax your
existing agreement to 581-3290 and indicate the changes.
A new agreement will be completed and ready for pick-up
within 48 hours.
