About the Collection

Booth Library participates in the Federal Depository Library Program, which provides free public access to government information.  Booth Library has been a depository library since 1962.  As a member of this program we select to receive about 50 percent of the materials distributed by the Government Printing Office.

The collection includes material  from almost every federal agency.  The types of publications in the collection include one-time publications, annual reports, periodicals, research reports, statistical compilations, census data, regulations, laws, studies, and treaties.  The publications cover a wide range of subjects including statistics, legislation, health, education, economics, presidential information, employment, environment, and agriculture.

In addition to the federal documents collection, Booth Library is also a depository for Illinois state government documents and receives everything that is distributed to depository libraries in the state.

A government documents reference collection includes current laws and regulations of both the federal and state government, including the United States Code, Congressional Record, Federal Register, Illinois State Register and the Illinois Compiled Statutes.  The reference collection also includes indexes and finding aids for government information.

In addition to the documents in paper, the library also has an extensive collection of government information on CD-ROM, DVD, maps, and microfiche.  We also provide access to the growing quantity of government information available on the Internet.

As a federal depository library, we serve the Eastern Illinois University community as well as members of the 19th Congressional District.  There are no fees to use the library and the building is ADA accessible.

Finding Government Information

Since 1988, government documents housed in Booth Library have been cataloged and are accessible through the Illinet Online Catalog.  Most government documents carry the Superintendent of Documents  (SuDoc) call numbers and are shelved on 2000 North.  SuDoc numbers are assigned based on issuing agency and publication type. Some government documents have been assigned Library of Congress call numbers and are shelved in the general stacks.  Microfiche documents can be found on 1000 North. The Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Documents can also be searched to identify government documents.  This is the most complete index to government publications available.  This catalog is available from GPO Access
(http://www.access.gpo.gov).

Most of the government documents can be checked out in the same way as other library materials.  Reference materials must be used in the library.

Government information available electronically can be accessed from the Government Documents web site (http://www.eiu.edu/~booth/govdocs).

Reference and Instruction

The faculty and staff at the Reference Desk are able to help identify and locate the information you need.  Reference service is provided during all hours the library is open.  Library instruction is also available on locating government information or using specific resources.
