Dr. Michael A. Goodrich
Professor Emeritus
Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University, 1964
Life Science Building 2075

.

Dr. Goodrich completed the Ph.D. in Entomology at Pennsylvania State University in 1964. He joined the faculty at Eastern Illinois University in 1964 as Associate Professor of Zoology. As a result of his active research and teaching he was promoted to Professor in 1973 at which rank he continued until his retirement in 1995. He received numerous Faculty Excellence Awards and two Professional Advancement Awards during this period. As a member of the faculty of the Department of Zoology, Dr. Goodrich taught Entomology and graduate courses in Animal Behavior and Systematics, as well as lower division classes for majors and non-majors in the Biological Sciences.

The primary research interests of Dr. Goodrich are in the systematics, ecology and evolution of Coleoptera. Over the past 40 years, he has published extensively on the families Scarabaeidae, Byturidae, Biphyllidae, Staphylinidae and Erotylidae, as well as several other families of beetles.

Although Dr. Goodrich retired in 1995, he actively continues his research, as well as extensive curatorial work in the

Spooner-Riegel-Goodrich Insect Collection here at E.I.U. His current research projects include: systematic study of Neotropical Biphyllidae; a faunistic study of Virginia Erotylidae; and a field project collecting Coleoptera at the "Gulf Islands Nature Preserve" in Pinellas Co., Florida.

Research in progress:

Systematic study of the Byturidae (Coleoptera) of the world, including the subfamily Platydascillinae; and of the Biphyllidae and related families of clavicorn Coleoptera. (With C. A. Springer of Norfolk, VA)

Ecological and systematic study of North American Erotylidae (Coleoptera), including study of associations with host fungi. (With P. E. Skelley of the Florida State Collection of Arthropods, Gainesville, FL.)

Ecological and systematic study of the oxyporine Staphylinidae of North America. (With R. S. Hanley of the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND.)

Ecological and systematic study of other Coleoptera, including: New World Cetoniinae (Scarabaeidae); Lymexylonidae; Colydiidae; Hyperaspini (Coccinellidae); etc.

Developmental and ecological study of camel crickets (With T. J. Cohn of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.)

Faunistic survey of the Coleoptera of the Florida Gulf Islands Nature Preserve, Pinellas County, FL
