News, Honors and Awards

 

Anna Barsoukova received the Graduate School Award of Excellence for "Cell Biology of ApoE in Cortical Cultured Neurons - Possible Roles in Alzheimer's Disease."   Anna also received a Graduate Student Investigator Award during ScienceFest 2003.

 

Eric Bollinger received a COS Achievement and Contribution Award for Research/Creative Activity.

 

Janice Coons received a COS Achievement and Contribution Award for Balanced Activity.

 

Steven Daniel was awarded Tenure.

 

Kyle Dunn (Thomas Nelson, mentor) received a SURE Award during ScienceFest 2003.

 

Bud Fischer was selected as the Commencement Marshal for the graduate school for the Fall 203 commencement ceremonies.  Bud also received a COS Achievement and Contribution Award for Research/Creative Activity and received The Teacher-Scholar Award during ScienceFest 2003.

 

Stacey Fuhrmann (Stephen Mullin, mentor), received a SURE Award during ScienceFest2003.

 

Robert Gillespie (Andrew Methven, mentor) was presented with a Graduate Student Investigator Award during ScienceFest 2003.

 

Kipp Kruse stepped down as Department of Biological Sciences Chair and returned to teaching and

Andrew Methven  was appointed as Acting Chair of the department, effective January 1, 2004. Bud Fischer assumed the role of Acting Associate Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, effective January 1, 2004.

 

Melissa Litherland (Britto Nathan, mentor) received a Graduate Student Investigator Award during ScienceFest 2003.

 

Scott Meiners received the International Programs Initiative Award.

 

Britto Nathan was presented with the Graduate Dean's Award of Excellence for "Birth of brain cells-death of a dogma, and rise of hope for Alzheimer's disease."  Britto also received a COS Achievement and Contribution Award for Research/Creative Activity and CFR Research Award Recognition.  Additionally, Britto was presented with the Lida G. Wall Faculty Research Mentor Award during ScienceFest 2003.

 

Charles Pederson and Paul Switzer received COS Achievement and Contribution Awards for Research/Creative Activity.

 

Brian Towey (Stephen Mullin, mentor) received a Graduate Student Investigator Award at ScienceFest 2003.

 

Brent Wachholder received a Young Botanist Award.  Brent also received a SURE Award (Henry Owen, mentor) during ScienceFest 2003.

 

Kathryn Yurkonis received a Graduate School Research/Creative Activity Award for "Exotic species impacts on species turnover."  Scott Meiners was her mentor.

 

2003 Publishing Scholars Reception

    The COS Publishing Scholars Reception was held on October 29, 2003 in the 1895 Room of the

    University Union for faculty members that had published an article since September 1, 2002.  The

    following faculty members from the Biological Sciences Department were honored at this reception:

    Eric Bollinger, Janice Coons, Charles Costa, Robert Fischer, Michael Goodrich, Kipp Kruse, Scott

    Meiners, Steve Mullin, Britto Nathan, Tom Nelson, Paul Switzer and Gordon Tucker

    EIU CFR Award for "Adaptive Significance of Aberrant Song in Chickadees in Illinois."

    EIU CFR Award, "Comparison of Nesting Success of Red-Headed Woodpeckers in Three Habits."

    EIU Redden Grant.

    EIU Summer Research/Creative Activity Award.

 

Gary Bulla received the following funding and grants:

    EIU CFR Award for "Type 2 Diabetes: Role of HNF1a and Co-factors."

    EIU Summer Research/Creative Activity Award.

 

Janice Coons received an EIU CFR Award, "Development of Production Techniques to Provide Native Plants for Use in Illinois Landscaping." and an EIU Summer Research/Creative Activity Award.

 

Steve Daniel and Ann Fritz received an EIU CFR Award for "The Microbial Constituents of the Reproductive Tract and the Digestive Tract of the Caribbean Fruit Fly, Anastrepha suspensa."

 

Bud Fischer received a Sanitary District of Decatur Grant for "Biotic assessment of water quality in a stretch of the Sangamon River receiving effluent from the Sanitary District of Decatur." $105,242 (Co-PI)

 

Ann Fritz received an EIU Redden Grant.

 

Gary Fritz received an EIU CFR Award for "Male Load Versus Genetic Diversity: Testing Two Hypotheses for the Origin of Multiple Mating in Social Insects."

 

Jaymie Rae Krone received an EIU Undergraduate Research Grant for "Impact of plant-derived phenolic compounds on growth and toxin production by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum." (Steven Daniel, mentor).

 

James McGaughey received an  EIU Redden Grant.

 

Kipp McGilliard received an  EIU Redden Grant.

Steve Daniel gave an Invited research seminar was presented on October 2, 2003 as part of the

    seminar series in the Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center at the University of

    Wisconsin-Madison. The title of the talk was "Kidney Stones and the Microbial Handling of

    Oxalogenic Precursors in the Human Gastrointestinal Tract".
