Biological Sciences Graduate Student Association

The Biological Sciences Graduate Student Association (BSGSA) was established in 1996 to organize all biological science graduate students into a single group in order to discuss issues relevant to graduate students and make recommendations to the graduate coordinator and other faculty members.  The BSGSA provides the following benefits:

- Discuss the purpose and the evaluate duties of graduate assistants.
- Provides an opportunity for all graduate students to socialize.
- Evaluate library resources and suggest improvements.
- Take part in biological conferences and meetings.
- Become a resource liaison for other students and faculty.

The Eastern Illinois University Biological Sciences Graduate Student Association become a Recognized Student Organization by the University in November, 1996.  It had a membership of 25 students and 2 faculty advisors at that time.  It is an open forum for all biology graduate students and faculty.   The BSGSA has played a large part in maintaining academic and social atmospheres within the Biological Sciences Department. The BSGSA was the foundation for the first Graduate Student Expo, where approximately 30 students from different disciplines presented posters and seminars on current research in their respective fields.   The BSGSA also had several participants in the 1997 Midwest Ecology and Evolution Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, leading to the selection of Eastern Illinois University as the host site for the 1998 conference.
