The B.A. in General Studies Adult Degree Program and the School of Continuing Education awards five to eight scholarships each fall and spring semester, which are applied toward tuition and fees the following term.

Robert A. Pringle Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship is funded by an endowment in honor of Dr. Robert Pringle, who founded the B. A. in General Studies degree program.

Criteria include:

  • Financial need

  • B. A. in General Studies students who:
    - are in good academic standing;
    - have completed at least one semester of course work;
    - can illustrate potential for college work;

  • Life experience, interests, and completed academic work shall be considered.

Habeeb Habeeb Annual Scholarship for Nontraditional Students – This scholarship is established by Habeeb and Joy Habeeb. Mr. Habeeb is a graduate of the B. A. in General Studies.

Criteria include:

  • Financial need

  • B. A. in General Studies students who:
    - are in good academic standing;
    - have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Ivan W. and Mabel Blum Weaver Scholarship – This scholarship is endowed by Ivan W. Weaver and his children to assist adult students.

Criteria include:

  • B. A. in General Studies students who:
    - have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
    - have at least one semester of course work yet to be completed.

The Angel Scholarship This scholarship, established by an EIU employee, will assist BGS students working toward their degree.

Criteria include:

  • Financial need

  • B. A. in General Studies students who:
    - have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Director’s Award - This scholarship is supported by donations from graduates and friends of the B. A. in General Studies.

Criteria include:

  • Demonstration of outstanding achievement

  • B. A. in General Studies students who:
    - have completed at least 90 credit yours of college courses;
    - have at least one semester of course work yet to be completed.

Brenda Edgar Scholarship for Women - Funded through a generous gift from Mrs. Brenda Edgar, former First Lady of the State of Illinois and a graduate of the B. A. in General Studies, this scholarship was established to provide assistance to single mothers who have overcome obstacles in their quest for a B. A. degree.

Criteria include:

  • Women who are:
    - age 25+;
    - are single parents;
    - have faced significant obstacles to achieving an undergraduate degree;
    - are currently enrolled in at least 6 credit hours;
    - have completed at least 60 college course credit hours;
    - have a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Robert Thomas Lynch, Virginia Gwin Lynch, and Robert William Unger Scholarship – This scholarship was established by the families of Robert and Virginia Lynch and Robert Unger to assist adult students who are age 50 or older.

Criteria include:

  • B. A. in General Studies full-time or part-time students who:
    - are age 50+.

School of Continuing Education Staff Scholarship – This scholarship is established by the staff of the School of Continuing Education at EIU. The recipient must be a full-time or part-time nontraditional student enrolled in any Continuing Education program in good academic standing.

Criteria include:

  • Financial need;

  • Students in any Continuing Education program who:
    - are in good standing;
    - have at least one semester yet to be completed.

The William C. Hine Continuing Education Adult Scholarship is funded in honor of Dr. William C. Hine, former dean of the School of Continuing Education.

Criteria include:

  • B. A. in General Studies full-time or part-time students who:
    - have a minimum GPA of 2.75;
    - have at least one semester yet to be completed.

Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship - ASL will grant a total of ten $2200 scholarships.

Criteria include:

  • Financial need

  • Adult students enrolled in an EIU undergraduate degree program, with:
    - 30 hours of completed coursework at EIU;
    - a minimum GPA of 3.2.

Spring Awards (Apply in Fall)

Eileen and Reuben Seltzer Scholarship for Adult Learners - This scholarship was established to honor Mr. and Mrs. Seltzer, staunch supporters of higher education and the parents and grandparents of several EIU alumnae.

Criteria include:

  • Financial need

  • B. A. in General Studies full-time or part-time students who:
    - have a minimum GPA of 2.0;
    - have completed at least 6 semester-hours of credit toward the B. A. in General Studies

  • Preference will be given to Chicago area residents.

School of Continuing Education Staff Scholarship – This scholarship is established by the staff of the School of Continuing Education at EIU. The recipient must be a full-time or part-time nontraditional student enrolled in any Continuing Education program in good academic standing.

  • Students in any Continuing Education program who:
    - are in good standing;
    - have at least one semester yet to be completed.

P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) is an international philanthropic organization where women celebrate the advancement of women; educate women through scholarships, grants, awards, loans, and stewardship; and motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.
