God Save the Queen, Sex Pistols, Virgin Records, promotional poster designed by Jamie Reid, 39'' x 27", 1977
November 12, 2011 - February 26, 2012
Main Galleries, Tarble Arts Center
Détournement literally means “to deflect or redirect.” Originally a mid-20th century French political tactic, the term is recognized today as a strategy of turning known ideas or images into something new and different with the intent to communicate subversive ideas in a familiar guise. Included in the exhibition are comics, posters, commercial design, and other graphics and materials. Curated for the Tarble by EIU Art professors Robert Petersen and Stephen Eskilson.

In conjunction with the Détournement exhibition visiting artist Eames Demetrios will present programs on his creation Kcymaerxthaere, a global work of three dimensional storytelling. “Basically I have created an alternative universe that is largely consistent with our linear world but with much different stories, peoples, flora, fauna, even physical laws. Then I go around the world installing markers and historical sites honoring events from the parallel world in our linear world.” Funded by the Excellence in Fine Arts Visiting Artist program of the EIU College of Arts & Humanities.
