Détournement:

Subversive Visual Communication

God Save the Queen, Sex Pistols, Virgin Records, promotional poster designed by Jamie Reid, 39'' x 27", 1977

November 12, 2011 - February 26, 2012
Main Galleries, Tarble Arts Center

Détournement literally means “to deflect or redirect.” Originally a mid-20th century French political tactic, the term is recognized today as a strategy of turning known ideas or images into something new and different with the intent to communicate subversive ideas in a familiar guise. Included in the exhibition are comics, posters, commercial design, and other graphics and materials. Curated for the Tarble by EIU Art professors Robert Petersen and Stephen Eskilson.
