Philanthropies
Alpha Sigma Alpha not only believes in donating
financially to our national philanthropies, but
also interacting with those that we are helping
and volunteering at events when possible. The
sisters love to work together in the community
and lend a hand to those in need. We try to work
in the community a couple times a month and some
sisters are able to volunteer weekly.
ASA supports the S. June Smith Center and helps
to provide a brighter future for developmentally
delayed toddlers. "Because of the Alpha Sigma
Alpha Foundation’s generosity, many children
will receive specialized education, training,
and therapy that is essential to their leading
happy and productive lives!" — Patricia
Shenk, S. June Smith Foundation Board of Directors.
The
Special Olympics was officially adopted by Alpha
Sigma Alpha as a national philanthropic project
in 1976. Since then the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation
has supported the Special Olympics as they strive
to empower individuals with mental retardation
to become physically fit, productive and respected
members of society through sports training and
competition. The Gamma Omega Chapter participates
in Friend for a Day at Lakeland College in Mattoon,
Illinois every fall semester. In the spring, our
members take an active role in the Special Olympics
meet that is held every year at O’Brien
Stadium here at Eastern Illinois University.
Gamma Omega hosts Alpha Bowl, a bowling tournament,
Alpha Cup, a soccer tournament, and Have a Heart,
Donate a Dollar where members sit at various halls
around campus collection donations, once a year.
All proceeds are donated to our two national philanthropies.
In addition to hosting several of our own philanthropies,
Alpha Sigma Alpha loves participating in other
sorority and fraternity’s philanthropies!
For
the third year in a row, ASA participated in EIU’s
Relay for the Life during the spring semester.
