1st instance of use or possession
with no aggravating factors
Completion of the Personal Drinking
Profile & $50 fine
2nd instance of use or possession
- no aggravating factors
Completion of the Alcohol 101 computer-based educational program,
$100 fine, parental notification if the student is under 21
With aggravating factors, especially
concern for health (extreme intoxication, passed out, hazarding personal safety)
or affect on others (damage, disruption, fighting):
Suspension or expulsion if appropriate, or if continued enrollment is permitted:
Housing or University Disciplinary Probation, minimum full semester with parental
notification if under 21, with other conditions as appropriate (fine, imposed
reassignment or expulsion from on-campus housing, public service, monitored
educational achievement, etc),
Screening by the Health Education and Resource Center, with likely referral
to the
Alcohol Response-Ability educational program ($50 fee)
City of Charleston Penalties Commonly Imposed for Violations of Related
Ordinances
Disorderly Conduct/Disturbing the Peace, $85; Minor in a bar $150; Underage
Drinking, $250;
False ID card, $300 + 1 yr loss of driver's license; Gift or sale of alcohol
to a minor, $350.
Possession of a falsified ID card is also a Class IV felony in Illinois!
Drug-Related Disciplinary Sanctions Commonly Imposed by the University*
Marijuana - Use or possession;
or possession of paraphernalia
1st instance (no evidence of trafficking) - Disciplinary Probation, parental
notification,
$100 fine, Satisfactorily complete the Risk Education Program ($50 fee).
2nd instance - Suspension (minimum full semester), parental notification if
under 21
Providing to others - Suspension (minimum one year), parental notification
if under 21.
Controlled substances other
than marijuana (methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstacy, etc.)
Possession or use -Suspension (minimum full semester), parental notification
if under 21
Providing to others - Expulsion, parental notification if under 21
Citations for city ordinance
violations, or more commonly criminal prosecution, are also usually
sought for the same drug-related incident that results in University disciplinary
action.
The typical result of a first offense misdemeanor possession of cannabis conviction
is a fine of around $600
and a year of court supervision.
* Note - There are no mandated disciplinary sanctions for violations
of the Student Conduct Code. The individual
circumstances of the student and incident are considered when determining
an appropriate University response.
