2006 African and African Diaspora Conference
 

Welcome

Eastern Illinois University will be hosting an international conference on the theme “Images of African Peoples: Photography, History and Culture in Africa and the African Diaspora,” from March 31 to April 2, 2006 in Charleston, Illinois. The topics to be explored at the conference includes, but not limited to the following:

  • photography and African and African Diaspora identity
  • photography as a tool for cultural expression and awareness
  • photographs as sources for historical reconstruction
  • gender and photography
  • photography, anthropologists and the black female body
  • photography, race, ethnicity and representation
  • social and political uses of photographs – anti-colonial struggles and the civil rights movements
  • photographs as visual and cultural memories
  • African and African Diaspora images in films
  • photography, black femininity and masculinity
  • children as photographic subjects, photography
  • photography and environmental and ecological history.

Prospective conference participants are advised to submit a 250-word paper abstract with the following information:

  • author’s name,
  • address,
  • institutional affiliation,
  • telephone,
  • and e-mail address

The closing date for submitting paper proposals is November 30, 2005.
