Note: Students, who want to participate in study abroad and are not admitted to EIU, will need to contact the admissions office to receive a guest student application. SUMMER 2008 PROGRAMS (other programs to be announced) AUSTRIA Program Name: The Good Life in Vienna Dates: May 6 – May 27, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $3,200 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: The Good Life in Vienna: Students will use the beautiful and historic city of Vienna as a vehicle to study “the good life”, i.e. what is the best way to live. Students will live at KolpingHaus WienZentral, a modern young people’s hostel centrally located in Vienna and within walking distance of many of the locations and institutions to be visited as part of the course. Each day will be a combination of lecture/discussion and fieldtrips to sites relevant to the topic of the day. Students will learn how to “read” the art, architecture, city planning and public spaces as a reflection of an underlying theory of “what constitutes a good life.” There will be an excursion to the Alps for a study of “the good life in nature”. Vienna is a modern city with many young people and there is a lively cultural scene for students. May is an ideal time for a visit to this wonderful city. BAHAMAS Program Name: Subtropical and Marine Ecology (BIO 3888G) Dates: May 24 – May 31, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $1,900 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This course will be an introduction to subtropical and marine ecology. The focal point of this course is an intensive one-week study abroad experience at Forfar Field Station on Andros Island in the Bahamas. During their time on Andros Island, students will be exposed to a variety of topics in subtropical and marine ecology. They will observe subtropical plants and animals emphasizing marine fish and invertebrates in a variety of habitats including coral reefs (barrier, fringing, and patch reefs), turtle grass beds, oceanic blue holes, tidal pools and flats, mangrove and pine forests, and jungle-like coppices. Students will conduct research projects and also learn about conservation issues related to these habitats and the Bahamian culture. In addition to the week in the Bahamas, there will be 2 weeks of instruction on campus before departure and 1 week after returning. If so, consider celebrating nature, education and teaching in the Bahamas where surf and learning are a natural pair.Countless opportunities exist for learning and teaching as we explore, snorkel, beach comb and work directly in the local community’s schools. The treasures and the fantastic experiences of the Bahamian culture, nature awaits you this summer. BELGIUM Program Name: Archaeology Program in Belgium Date: June 29 – August 2, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $3960.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: Eastern Illinois University in partnership with the University of Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium invites applications for summer Archaeology Program. The dates are June 29-August 3, 2008, and the program centers on the excavation of medieval Walhain Castle. Four hours of credit may be either History or Earth Sciences, as the student chooses. The course is open to all students in good standing; there are no prerequisites, and no previous background in archaeology is required. CANADA Program Name: Toronto for Teachers Dates: May 5, 2008 – May 15, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $1,640.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: EIU teachers candidates! Find the world within a city and in your own placement classroom! See yourself participating in one of the great school systems of North America, applying your professional skills with the children of the world as you explore the diversity and beauty of Toronto’s urban culture. Connect your coursework to the renowned Faculty of Education at York University as well as to the children of Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East in their schools and neighborhoods. Socialize with York University teachers candidates. Experience Canadian curriculum in ESL classrooms. French immersion, anti-bias curriculum and multilingual approaches to literacy, especially drama. CHINA Program Name: Ethnobotany in China Dates: May 10 – June 7, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: tba Description: Ethnobotany is an investigation of past and present human dependence on plants, emphasizing plants used as foods and medicines. This course is an on site exploration of the diverse ways in which plants form an integral part of modern China and its history. ECUADOR Program Name: Environment, Society and Culture of Ecuador Dates: July 22, 2008 – August 10, 2008 Plus 12 hrs. class pre-departure Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $5,400 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This field program will provide a cross cultural and scientific experience as participants, over a three week period of time, traverse and explore unique ecological zones along the Equator. The course combines the study of cultural geography and earth science including the historical role of Indigenous, Hispanic, and Afro-Ecuadorians from the colonial period to the present time. Participants will study the volcanic and hydrologic landscape forming processes of the region and observe the impacts of these processes on topography, soils, transportation, land-use, flora, fauna, and settlement patterns. Various forms of agriculture from subsistence to plantation systems are observed as are the associated problems of erosion. Human and land interactions are examined in the tropical rainforest of the Ecuadorian Amazon, in the Andes Mountains, along the northern coast and on the Galapagos Islands located 600 miles off the coast of South America. ENGLAND Program Name: English Literary Landscapes Dates: June 2, 2008 – July 4, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: tba (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This course is an opportunity for students of all majors to read and discuss some of England’s most admired writers while resident in the British Midlands at Harlaxton Manor, a 100-room nineteenth-century manor house owned and operated by the University of Evansville as its British campus. Regular class meetings will be devoted to close reading of the assigned material and placement of it in socio-historical context. Supplementary weekly visits to literary sites will give students the opportunity to experience first hand the landscapes that the assigned writers have made famous. Writers include Jane Austen, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Emily Bronte, Thomas Hardy, and Virginia Woolf. Students will see a Shakespeare play at London’s new Globe Theatre, as well as visit sites of cultural importance, such as the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, Poet’s Corner at Westminster Abbey, and St. Paul’s. Students will also have ample opportunity to travel on weekends to sites of their own choice. FRANCE Program Name: Paris Study Abroad Dates: June 30 – July 31, 2008 Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $3200 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: The program is designed to offer students the opportunity to take two courses while studying in Paris. A student may take 3 credit hours in Art History and 3 credit hours in French. The city of Paris has the greatest collection of cultural resources in the world. The art history course focuses on the development of the city as it has functioned in the modern world since its complete rebuilding in the middle of the nineteenth century and the artistic and literary responses to both that process and France’s volatile political history. The French course offers students an opportunity to engage in the native culture by teaching how to speak the language as well as how to approach and access French culture. Students live on the international residential campus in the city of Paris for one month with some field trips out to important sites nearby, making museums, monuments, cafes and shops the classroom for experiential learning. This course is open to students in all majors. There are no prerequisites for the art history course; however, students interested in taking the French course need to complete FLF 1101 (at least one semester of French language) before the start of this program. There will also be upper division options for students having already completed lower division work in French. GERMANY Program Name: Geology, Geography and Culture of Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, and Austria Dates: May 7- May 29, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU 4101G – 3 SH (Spaceship Earth: The Present State) Estimated Program Cost: $4,975.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: The Geography, Geology, and Culture of Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, and Austria will be a 3 credit hour course that includes a brief history of the regions visited as well as comparisons between typically Western, Eastern and transitional European cultures. One of the central themes during this program will be a comparison and analysis of the “westernization” and change that Europe has undergone. Visiting some of the most important cultural, historic, and religious centers in Europe allows participants an opportunity to see how different regions influenced one another, as well as maintained their own identities. While a major part of European history was prior to World War II, the war and its aftermath are key to the change that Europe is currently undergoing. A major part of the program will be two days visiting Auschwitz Concentration Camps in Poland. Day one will be to Auschwitz I while day two will be to Auschwitz II (Auschwitz-Birkenau). Students will also have the option of visiting Dachau, outside Munich. The major financial and industrial cities of Frankfurt and Munich will be visited to show how parts of Germany have changed since WWII and visits in Berlin will allow the students to experience pre- and post-unification. The course is open to any current undergraduate or graduate student at Eastern Illinois University and has no pre-requisites. Since students will be able to receive credit for other courses, students are subject to the pre-requisites for those courses. For example, if a student wants to receive Senior Seminar credit, they must have at least 75 semester-hours completed. There are no language requirements for the program since English-speaking guides will be available during all portions. IRELAND Program Name: Politics on the Irish Stage Dates: May 14 – June 3, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $4900 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: “The Great Gaels of Ireland are the people God made mad- for all their wars are merry, and all their songs are sad.” Come experience this paradox firsthand through an examination of the Irish Theatre. Politics on the Irish Stage ITALY Program Name: From Renaissance Textile Guilds to Contemporary Fashion Dates: March 7, – March 16, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $2,670 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: The evolution of the Italian Fashion industry. Stroll through the Palazzo Pitti, home of the Grand Dukes of Florence and visit the Costume Gallery where we will be able to trace fashion from the 1600’s to today. Observe how beautiful silk brocades and velvets are handloomed and participate in a fashion show. Visit the many markets, from the street vendors to the designer outlets. Explore how new clothing companies are created and the important role marketing has in identifying their niche. ITALY Program Name: Italy – The Good Life Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $4,200 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This travel-study in Italy is open to all majors. We see the incredible highlights of Italy together and learn about history, culture, art and film. There is some free time in each city. Two orientation sessions in March. Travel Itinerary: What does the program cost include? Airfare 3 star Hotels. Breakfast. Also included: all excursions, tours, tips, transportation and admission to sites and museums some group dinners. That includes local travel, tours and sites most every day. Also included: travel insurance for trip cancellation/delay/lost baggage. (Travelguard) What extra money is needed? Students pay for most lunches & dinners and personal spending money. We don’t sit in a classroom in Italy. Academic work is online (WebCT) before or after travel. Students learn to think and write philosophically about their travel experiences and ideas. The Netherlands Program Name: Multicultural Human Behavior Dates: May 10 – June 8, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $1,880 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This course will introduce students to a variety of topics related to the influence of culture on behavior. General topics (e.g., cultural categorization, ethnocentrism) as well as more specific topics (e.g., culture and violence, gender roles) will be explored. Taking this course in Europe will allow students to discuss topics within the classroom and then observe cultural differences and similarities in another country. NETHERLANDS Program Name: International Environment of Business Dates: May 8 – June 9, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $3,320 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This study abroad course introduces students to the international business environment focusing on the European Union (EU). Topics include cultural, political, social, and economic factors affecting international business; the regulatory and ethical environment of global businesses. The course, which will be taught in Maastricht, The Netherlands, will include field trips to business firms and possibly to the EU headquarters in Brussels. Students will be encouraged to travel to other countries in Europe on weekends. SOUTH AFRICA Program Name: Family and Consumer Sciences Fall 2008 Semester of Study in Cape Town, South Africa Dates: August 7 – November 22, 2008 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $8,346.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: “Experience international education in a format which allows YOU to complete a full semester (up to 15hrs.) of required and elective coursework that fits seamlessly in YOUR human services or early childhood program of study at the undergrad or grad level.
