If so, consider celebrating nature, education and teaching in the Bahamas where surf and learning are a natural pair. Countless opportunities exist for learning and teaching as we explore, snorkel, beach comb and work directly in the local community’s schools. Program Name: Subtropical and Marine Ecology Dates: May 30 – June 6, 2009 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $2040.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This course will be an introduction to subtropical and marine ecology. The focal point of this course is an intensive one-week study abroad experience at Forfar Field Station on Andros Island in the Bahamas. During their time on Andros Island, students will be exposed to a variety of topics in subtropical and marine ecology. They will observe subtropical plants and animals emphasizing marine fish and invertebrates in a variety of habitats including coral reefs (barrier, fringing, and patch reefs), turtle grass beds, oceanic blue holes, tidal pools and flats, mangrove and pine forests, and jungle-like coppices. Students will conduct research projects and also learn about conservation issues related to these habitats and the Bahamian culture. In addition to the week in the Bahamas, there will be 2 weeks of instruction on campus before departure and 1 week after returning. Belgium Program Name: History; Geology/Geography Dates: July 4, 2009 – Aug. 1, 2009 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: TBA (Tuition and fees not included) Description: Eastern Illinois University in partnership with the University of Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium invites applications for Summer Archaeology Program. The dates are July 4-August 1, 2009, and the program centers on the excavation of medieval Walhain Castle. Four hours of credit may be in either History or Earth Sciences, as the student chooses. The course is open to all students in good standing; there are no prerequisites, and no previous background in archaeology is required.

Connect your coursework to the renowned Faculty of Education at York University as well as to the children of Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East in their schools and neighborhoods. Socialize with York University teachers candidates. Experience Canadian curriculum in ESL classrooms. French immersion, anti-bias curriculum and multilingual approaches to literacy, especially drama. CHINA, HUNAN PROVINCE AND BEIJING Program Name: Ethnobotany in China Overseas Program Dates: May 13, 2009 – June 3, 2009 Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $3851.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: Ethnobotany is an investigation of past and present human dependence on plants, emphasizing plants used as foods and medicines. This course is an on site exploration of the diverse ways in which plants form an integral part of modern China and its history. WEST INDIES (BARBADOS, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO) Program Name: Caring for the Caribbean Dates: May 9 - June 5, 2009 (start and finish of all on-campus and off-campus commitments) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: TBA Description: “Caring for the Caribbean” provides a unique study abroad opportunity where students are immersed in a culture different to their own. Fortunately for students, bachelor’s degrees, books, and backpacks happily coexist with beaches, boats and basking in the sun! Areas of Study: Sustainable Development, Ecotourism, Economics, Ecology, Business, and Public Administration. Curriculum Core: Achieving a balance between the demands of development and sustainable resource use. There are no course prerequisites; however, students must be in good academic standing. ECUADOR Program Name: Environment, Society and Culture of Ecuador Dates: July 21, 2009- August 9, 2009 Plus 12 hrs. class pre-departure Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $6,600 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This field program will provide a cross cultural and scientific experience as participants, over a three week period of time, are introduced to South American people in modern and remote locations while traversing and exploring unique ecological zones along the Equator. The course combines the study of geography, earth science, culture and history. Participants study the volcanic landscape forming processes of the region and observe the impacts of these processes on topography, hydrology, soils, various human lifestyles and environmental interactions are examined in the Andes Mountains, coast, tropical rainforest of the Ecuadorian Amazon, and Galapagos Isles located 600 miles off the coast of South America. At the conclusion of this program participants will have a lifetime of memories and a broader view of Third World cultures. ENGLAND Program Name: English Literary Landscapes Dates: May 31, 2009 – July 3, 2009 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $4,325.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This course is an opportunity for students of all majors to read and discuss some of England’s most admired writers while resident in the British Midlands at Harlaxton Manor, a 100-room nineteenth-century manor house owned and operated by the University of Evansville as its British campus. Regular class meetings will be devoted to close reading of the assigned material and placement of it in socio-historical context. Supplementary weekly visits to literary sites will give students the opportunity to experience first hand the landscapes that the assigned writers have made famous. Writers include Jane Austen, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Emily Bronte, Lord Dyron, and Virginia Woolf. Students will see a Shakespeare play at London’s new Globe Theatre, as well as visit sites of cultural importance, such as the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Gallery, Poet’s Corner at Westminster Abbey, and St. Paul’s. Students will also have ample opportunity to travel on weekends to sites of their own choice. IRELAND Program Name: Sport, Tourism and Recreation Experiences: An Irish Perspective Dates: May 13 – June 13, 2009 Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: TBA Description: This course consists of 4 class meetings at EIU and 16 days in the Republic of Ireland. Students are afforded the opportunity to examine and explore through a variety of learning events, the sport, tourism and recreation experiences and services in Ireland and related cultural, historical and environmental issues. Four cities and their rural surroundings will be visited: Dublin, Cork, Killarney and Galway. The students, at times while in Ireland, will be house in Youth hostels, which afford much cross cultural interchange with travelers from other countries. ITALY Program Name: From Renaissance Textile Guilds to Contemporary Fashion Design Dates: March 13-22, 2009 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $2,700.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: Come with us to beautiful Florence, Italy where you will explore the evolution of the Italian Fashion Industry. Stroll through the Palazzo Pitti, home of the Grand Dukes of Florence and visit the Costume Gallery where you will be able to trace fashion from the 1600’s to contemporary designers. Observe how beautiful silk brocades and velvets are handloomed and be the photographer at a fashion show. Visit the many markets, from the street vendors to the designer showrooms, including the Roberto Cavalli factory. Explore how new fashion lines are created and the important role marketing plays in identifying their niche. Visit some of the world’s foremost museums including the Uffizi, the Academia (home of Michelangelo’s David) and the Cappucci museum where this designer’s one of a kind fashions are on display. Travel Itinerary: ITALY Program Name: Italian Theatre from the Ancients to the Renaissance Dates: On-Campus Course Meetings: May 18–21, 2009 9-11:30am; May 21, 2009 1-3:30pm Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $4750.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: Italy…”such stuff as dreams are made on.” What does YOUR dream feel like? Come live it with us… and experience 2,000+ years of theatre history and culture as we meander up the Italian peninsula. (You need not be a dramaphile to love this trip!) Beginning in the ancient outposts of Greek culture in the South (Sicily), we will travel to and linger in the “eternal cities” of Pompeii and Rome, and conclude our voyage in the great Renaissance cities of the North-Parma, Vicenza, and Venice. In the process, we will experience together the evolution of the art form that touches us all. The trip will consist of site visitations to the theatres that witnessed these great developments, to museums such as the Vatican housing the treasures of our craft, and – if we are fortunate- to a live performance or two. The class work primarily will involve reading plays intimately connected to these sites and discussion of how artists throughout history shaped entertainment as we know it today.

Content: The nomenclature and reactions of major types of organic compounds including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, and aromatic compounds; stereochemistry; mechanisms of organic reactions; spectroscopy of organic compounds. Prerequisite: CHM 1410, 1415. NETHERLANDS Program Name: European Union Business Field Study Dates: May 12 – June 12, 2009 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $3,500 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: Learn about international business focusing on the European Union. Maastricht, the oldest city in the Netherlands with easy train access to other European countries is the base for the program. Maastricht is a beautiful and friendly city where English is widely spoken. Course topics include the cultural, social, political and economic factors affecting international business; ethics and regulation of global business; current international issues; and introduction to financial, marketing, and management issues of international businesses. The program includes field trips to businesses, guest lectures by business people, and the opportunity for students to travel on weekends and holidays. NETHERLANDS Program Name: Multicultural Human Behavior Dates: May 14-June 11, 2009 (Overseas Dates) Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: $2996.00 (Tuition and fees not included) Description: This course will introduce students to a variety of topics related to the influence of culture on behavior. General topics (e.g. cultural categorization, ethnocentrism) as well as more specifics topics (e.g. culture and violence, gender roles, culture and abnormality/deviance) will b explored. Taking this course in Europe will allow students to discuss topics within the classroom and then observe cultural differences and similarities in another country. CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA Program Name: Nation-Building in the “New” South Africa Dates: Overseas Program Dates: May 13 – June 12, 2009 Foreign/Study Abroad Course Number(s) and Title(s): Undergraduate: Graduate: EIU Equivalency or Substitution Course(s): Estimated Program Cost: TBA Description: Start planning NOW for four weeks of living in Cape Town, investigating the literature, history, politics, geography, ecology, arts and education at the Southern tip of the African continent. ALL MAJORS are welcome to participate in this interdisciplinary study abroad program. Class travel will include visits to important historical sites such as Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 26 years and to District Six, the location of an infamous forced removal. Members of the Umkonto We Sizwe, the military wing of the ANC, will guide us on “a township tour.” We will take in the panoramic view of Cape Town from the top of Table Mountain, travel to the spectacular Cape of Good Hope by bus and bicycle, visit a penguin colony, and experience a “safari” to an animal conservation site. All this and more while examining the process of nation building in the new South Africa.
