Academy of Lifetime Learning

The Academy of Lifetime Learning (ALL) is a new program for retired learners in the Eastern Illinois University area.  The goal of ALL is to provide non-credit academic short programs at a reasonable cost as well as opportunities for the development of relationships and networks among the retired community.

Summer 2008 Courses:

  • Taste of Italy
    Participants will learn about pairing food and wine as well as enjoy wines from unique places. The course will be taught by Masimo Coppetti, wine connoisseur, who teaches at Apicius Culinary Institute of Florence at Florence, Italy.

  • Exploring the Skies Above Illinois
    Course Description:  Have you ever wanted to be a weather observer?  Watch storms develop?  Forecast weather conditions for the next 48 hours?  This short course will provide you with the basic foundation of becoming an amateur weather observer.  In a one two and a half hour session you will identify clouds, learn how to forecast using a simple recipe, learn the anatomy of a supercell thunderstorm, and understand fascinating aspects of severe weather.

  • Gardening with Grandkids
    A super hands-on, make it and take it workshop!  Interact with your grandchild with loads of fun activities: Create a bejeweled stepping stone for the garden, plant an upside down tomato with an herb/salad garden on top of it, construct a topiary and paint a pot to hold it, snack on garden yummies, and much more.  Since we won’t have time for all the fun activities we’d like to do, we’ll be showing you examples and sending you home with a detailed booklet of other engaging projects to do together.  Presented under the direction of the U of I Extension of Coles County Master Gardeners.

  • Healthy Cooking Around the World
    Learn how to cook delicious Mediterranean, Italian, and American cuisines in healthy ways.  In addition to learning new cooking skills, participants will learn how to alter recipes to make them healthful.  Portion size for health benefits will be highlighted.  In this hands-on class, participants will create and eat their own lunch, and take home recipes.

    This series addresses five aspects of the aging process.  Each of the instructors has expertise in their subject.  Buy individual classes or buy 4 and get one free!

    • May 21 Nourishing the Body and Soul

    Would you like to learn more about the importance of health and nutrition for the body and soul?  The class will provide you with valuable information that you can put into practice.

    • May 28  Health Assessment of the Aging

    This class will address how a physician evaluates an aging well patient.  Health issues related to aging and indications of illness will also be discussed.

    • June 4  Social Aspects of Aging:  What it means to be old in our society.

    Much of what we learn about aging focuses on biological and psychological changes that happen as one ages; however, we don’t age in a vacuum! This class with focus on the ways in which social context influences our aging experience and how we can make this work to our advantage.

    • June 11  Functional Fitness: The Key to Staying Independent as You Age

    Playing with grandchildren, doing the shopping, preparing meals, taking care of your home, climbing stairs, and walking without fear of falling --- these tasks all depend on adequate strength and agility. Learn how to maintain independence and continue to enjoy life as you age through FUN-ctional physical activity.

    • June 18  Psychological Aspects of Aging: What happens to the brain and memory as we age?
      This class will investigate age-related changes in memory and problem-solving abilities,  as well as some problems that may arise such as dementia or Alzheimer’s.
      Dr. Cari Brito, Ph.D., Associate Professor at EIU; specializing in changes in the processes of sensing, perceiving and thinking processes during the aging process

    Time:  All classes will be held from 10-11:00 AM

  • Botanical Gardens and Lunch on “The Hill”
    Bring your camera and your appetite as we head to St. Louis!  We’ll begin at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, where we will meet Master Gardener Chick Buehrig who will give us a tour of the 1500 varieties of daylilies in the garden.  EIU botanist Gordon Tucker, Ph.D., research associate at the Botanical Gardens, will accompany us and share his extensive knowledge of vegetation and of the Gardens.  Then we’re off to “The Hill” for a wonderful Italian lunch at the renowned Favazza’s.  We’ll return to the gardens for an afternoon of exploring and relaxing.  We will finish our day with frozen custard at the world-famous Ted Drewes, and return home to Charleston.
