Does EIU have my major?


What do you want to be? Eastern offers more than 44 undergraduate majors through four academic colleges.

What are classes like?
  • Average class size is 23 students.
  • Student-to-faculty ratio is 16:1.
  • Approximately 72 percent of full-time faculty have a terminal degree in their discipline.
  • The majority of classes are taught by full-time faculty.
  • Nearly 35 percent of the full-time faculty are full professors, and an additional 22 percent are associate professors.
  • Eastern emphasizes out-of-the-classroom experiences such as internships and other research opportunities (Eastern offers college credit for many internship opportunities).

For the sixth consecutive year, Eastern Illinois University has been named one of the top Midwestern public universities in its class by U.S. News & World Report. EIU is ranked eighth among all Midwestern public universities offering a full range of undergraduate degrees and some master’s degree programs. EIU is the only Illinois public university in the top 15.


The Midwest region category includes Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

How long will it take to graduate?
Most programs require 120 semester hours to graduate. Education majors are required to complete approximately 135. Students can graduate in four years provided they take 30 hours per year and do not change their major. Eastern also offers a guaranteed graduation program. Check out our EIU4 program.
