Overview

Journalism majors should have a strong in interest in news, writing and story telling. Backed by a strong foundation in law and ethics, students learn to report news across a variety of platforms, from print, to the Web, to broadcast, and they learn how to work as public relations practitioners.

Professional Development Opportunities

The Journalism Department is headquarters for the Mid-America Press Institute. MPI conducts a series of workshops each year. Journalism students can attend these workshops free of charge.

Students and professors annually attend a number of regional, state and national conventions, workshops and conferences sponsored by College Media Advisers/Associated Collegiate Press, Public Relations Society of America, Illinois Broadcasters Association, Illinois News Broadcasters Association and Broadcast Education Association.

Faculty Honors & Awards

- Dr. Les Hyder was awarded a Student'��s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2008.
- Dr. Sally Renaud was awarded a Student'��s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2009.
- Professor Brian Poulter won the 2011 Scholarship of Application award given by the Small Programs Interest Group of AEJMC. The competition is designed to showcase work that journalism, advertising and public relations professors do outside of the classroom that enhance their teaching. Poulter shot more than 100 photos and wrote 22 stories from the road on a 10,000-mile solo motorcycle trip that took him from eastern Illinois to the Canadian Arctic and back.
