T
he Graduation Certification Process

Betsy Miller is the Certification Officer for the College of
Arts and Humanities. The Certification Officer is responsible for reviewing each student's academic records and determining if the student is on schedule in meeting all graduation requirements. When a student declares a major/option/ concentration/minor, they must meet all the degree requirements in order to graduate. A degree is granted once a student has met all degree requirements and earned a minimum of 120 hours of course work. Degree requirements are found in the catalog published the year which the student is admitted to Eastern Illinois University. Each department has different guidelines and obligations, therefore it is the student responsibility to meet with a departmental advisor and review all the degree program's requirements, including all general education, major, minor and teacher certification options.

The review process by the College Certification Officer can take place once a student has earned 60 hours towards their degree. To initiate the process, a student must complete the Application for Graduation located in PAWS under the Records Link.

After the application is submitted, the Records Office will forward a copy of a student's transcripts to the certification officer. An audit review for the degree desired will be conducted in the order which it is received. The audit review will indicate a student's progress toward completion of the degree requirements. Once completed, the Certification Officer will notify the student by mail. The period between the time a student applies and is notified by the Certification Officer varies. A student should expect a degree review prior to the beginning of the next semester in which they applied for graduation. It is critical that enough time is allowed in order to make any schedule changes if necessary.

The Commencement Office will mail a commencement postcard to the student's home address. This information is not mailed to a local address. During the commencement ceremony, a diploma cover is handed to the graduating student. Questions about the ceremony should be addressed by the Commencement Office. The official diploma certificate is mailed to the address indicated on the Application for Graduation and could take up to three months to receive. Inquires concerning diplomas should be directed to the Records Office at (217) 581-3511.

Students are encouraged to arrange a meeting with their academic advisor prior to applying for graduation. If further information is required, please call the College of Arts and Humanities Deans Office at (217) 581-7370.
