Recreation Administration Curriculum

Goal 1: To revise curriculum to address current professional development issues and trends.

Faculty continue current collaborations with FCS and KSS and remain open to other possible collaborative efforts.

1.5) Investigate an outdoor emphasis area

Review existing certificate programs and course offerings to investigate feasibility of emphasis area

   A review of existing certificates in the area of outdoor adventure programming (e.g., WFR, High Ropes) was conducted and feasibility of student registration explored... ongoing. Dr. Barkley met with R.O.T.C. representative and principal architects of ropes courses in the Midwest and nationwide to discuss a joint ropes-course construction. It is a promising project that can bring more visibility to the outdoor area. More students are learning about the possibility of focusing on outdoor and adventure education and are declaring the major as a result.... ongoing

With the guidance of agency professionals [and Dr. Barkley], the students in REC 4600 focused on developing an historic recreation park site on the grounds of Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site. Students in REC 4850 focused on developing the means to implement the LLCSHS plans developed by the students in REC 4600. ... ongoing

Recreation Administration Visibility

Goal 2: To enhance the Department of Recreation Administration's visibility and development opportunities.

2.1) Continue and strengthen relationships with recreation agencies. Faculty will explore ways to serve on recreation related professional committees.

 Faculty continue to develop and strengthen relationships with agencies through ongoing contact centered around project development, research, and including fieldwork and internship coordination and site visits. Faculty Meeting

2.2) Maintain an up-to-date mailing and email list of Department of Recreation Administration alumni. Work with foundation to develop an accurate email list.

Faculty continue to serve on various community, state, and national boards (i.e., IAPD Research Council; IPRA College and University Relations Committee; ILRTA) Dr. Barkley became a member/representative for the IPRA/IAPD College and University Relations Committee.   
2.5) Develop presentations, publications and other creative endeavors. Faculty will prepare session proposals, manuscripts, report, and engage in other creative activities.

Faculty continue to publish and present their work at regional, state and national outlets (i.e., NRPA Congress; IAPD/IPRA Conference). Dr. Barkley presented at the IAPD/IPRA annual conference on pilot programming in Afterschool Athletics  Department Faculty
