Thoughts on Fall Commencement

This past Saturday was a day of great joy and celebration for the EIU community as we held our annual fall commencement ceremony. As the graduates crossed the stage, the look in their eyes and spring in their step showed resolve and optimism in facing the future.

As I congratulated each graduate and they voiced their thanks, I thought of how our newest alumni will make the most of their educations in changing society for the better. I thought of our faculty and staff, who prepared our graduates for the next steps in their life journeys. I thought of how preparing our students to serve society remains one of Eastern's most important ways of building the future of our country. I am proud of the accomplishments of our students, proud of the sacrifices they and their families made to attain graduation, and proud to be a part of EIU.
