Why Choose EIU?
An online format allows the working RN the opportunity to take classes to pursue a baccalaureate degree that meets the individual schedule of the student. Teaching in real time, through a feature as Blackboard Collaborate, allows students that choose to participate in an online classroom enabling the student to interact with peers and faculty. These classroom sessions are archived and presented to all students for viewing. This opportunity to visualize the content and hear the classroom discussion enhances the online format of the course and supports the discussion questions and other assignments.
Flexibility is maintained in the clinical/practicum courses by the supporting course design of the use of qualified preceptors available in the region that the student lives and works. This approach promotes individual learning with the “one on one” observation of application of theoretical content.
The online courses offered provide a learning community recognizing previous learning, and build upon the existing knowledge with the introduction of new concepts/ideas. Facilitated by faculty that views students as colleagues on a learning journey, inquiries are encouraged to optimize each student’s potential. Courses cover concepts of theory, research, patho-pharmacology, community health, leadership and management. The culminating course offers the student the opportunity to build a reflective portfolio of previous course works that demonstrates the student’s learning. An evidenced based practice protocol is completed to provide a culminating experience of actual application of the learned principles of the courses through critical thinking.
The design of the online program offers the student flexibility to meet the needs of a working professional and to accommodate a life schedule. Clear expectations and frequent communication with the Rn to BS in Nursing department supports the transition into the learning environment. Student success is our endeavor! The pace of the program is driven by the student’s needs.
Offering the student a “loaner laptop computer”, a “loaner” nursing equipment bag, and other materials provides physical support to the enrolled student for program success.
