The Simple Steps to Becoming EIU

To be eligible for degree candidacy, applicants must meet all of the requirements for admission to the Graduate School and the music program.

Sign Up for MyEIU and Learn More about Eastern

Your MyEIU account is free and easy; all it takes is an email address to get started. You can even sign up via Facebook! Once you've logged into MyEIU, you can learn everything there is to know about Eastern and get information about everything the university has to offer — all tailored to your unique set of interests!

Apply to the Graduate School

All students can apply to the graduate school through MyEIU. The graduate school requires:

  1. A complete online application
  2. A copy of your official transcripts
  3. A $30 application fee

Apply to the Program

Thank you for your interest in graduate study at Eastern Illinois University. To be eligible for degree candidacy, applicants must meet all of the requirements for admission to the Graduate School.

For admission to the Master of Arts in Music, Concentrations in Vocal, Instrumental, or Keyboard Performance, Conducting, or Composition, please do the following:

  1. Mail or e-mail a one-page personal statement, a résumé, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Marilyn Coles, Music Department Graduate Coordinator. Applicants should complete the Graduate Program Reference Form and give to the recommender to complete and sign. The recommender may mail directly to Dr. Marilyn Coles or sign across a sealed envelope and return to the applicant to send. If the applicant chooses not to sign the waiver, then the recommender may fill out and submit the form by email to Dr. Marilyn Coles (mjcoles@eiu.edu) or by mail to:

  1. Concentration requirements:

  2. Performance (Voice, Keyboard, Instrumental) – Complete an audition.
    Conducting – Submit a video recording of a recent performance or rehearsal and an audition.
    Composition – Submit scores and recordings of original compositions.

  3. Complete a personal interview.

For admission to the Master of Arts in Music, Concentration in Music Education, please do the following:

  1. Concentration requirement for Music Education – Undergraduate degree in music education and a minimum of one year teaching experience required.

  2. Complete a personal interview.

Keep an Eye on Your Admission Status

You'll be able to keep tabs on the status of your application through MyEIU; you'll receive a message when you have been officially admitted to EIU!

Apply for an Assistantship

If you are interested in a graduate assistantship, you also need to submit a graduate assistantship application.

Graduate assistantships are typically awarded in accordance with the academic year. Assistantship applications are normally accepted through the middle of February; a decision for the next academic year comes within a month. For more information about graduate assistantships, please click here.
