Infrastructure Technologies anticipates and meets the needs of the campus community in the fast-changing environment of ever-increasing network data speeds, server administration, virtualization and green computing, and being responsive to the software and hardware needs of the university.

Infrastructure Technologies is one of the largest and most diverse subunits of Information Technology Services, providing services ranging from oversight of the campus network to email to server administration.

The group encompasses four areas: Network Systems, Enterprise Systems, System Administration and Operations.

System Administration: Manages the university's central information systems — campus Web servers, WebCT, PantherMail and PantherFile, as well as ancillary services such as main campus directories of AD and OID. Staff is composed of Kelly Crawford, IT manager/administrative coordinator; Aaron Allison, Mindy Hurst, Susan Liu, Janel Moore, and Robert Rigg.

Enterprise Systems: Deals with enterprise data storage and virtualization, managing the university's enterprise servers in the main campus Data Center, software virtualization and enterprise data backups. Staff in this area is Warren Lilly, IT manager/administrative coordinator; Allen Clayton, Thomas MacMullen, David Miller, Tony Redding and Chris Walker.

Network Systems: Oversees campus network infrastructure, wireless Internet deployment, network data flows, main campus firewall and Safe Connect. Staff there is Randy Ethridge, network engineer V; Mark Barrow, Kent Cummings and Steven Steele.

Operations: Located in the Data Center in the Student Service building, provides management of tape backup data, and does mass printing jobs for campus, such as paycheck notification as well as ad hoc reports and labels. Staff consists of Mike Eagan.

Recent Infrastructure Technologies projects include:

Network Systems:

  • Implement Phase II of Network refresh (Internet Connection Layer upgrade).

  • Implement Phase II of UPS battery refresh for network wiring closets.

  • Upgrade Excinda WAN optimization appliance capacity to expand bandwidth management.

Enterprise Systems:

  • Upgrade server deployment supporting the Virtual Desktop Initiative.

  • Expand Virtual Desktop Initiative to provide secure external access.

  • Convert Netapp storage to clustered deployment.

  • Upgrading NetBackup Enterprise Software and restructuring enterprise backup deployment.

  • Developing procedures and processes for managing and monitoring Virtual Server resources.

System Administration:

  • Implement new framework for support of mobile application development and deployment.

  • Providing ongoing support of Desire2Learn.

  • Upgrade Domain Name Service servers and software.

  • Upgrading Microsoft Sharepoint collaboration environment for campus use to version 2013.

  • Migrating application authentication services from Oracle Internet Directory to Microsoft Active Directory.

  • Plan and implement Microsoft Office 365 Exchange Online for undergraduate email including federated authentication.
