Dr. Brenda Page teaches Diversity classes. Before moving to Charleston, she taught full-time many years in the Special Education Department at Illinois State University. Growing up on a farm in the small rural community of Toledo, Illinois, she had few thoughts about disabilities. That all changed when her son, Jim, was born with cerebral palsy. That event has since deepened her understanding about the complexity of being human across a range of diverse life situations, as well as, guide her life choices. Over the next few years, she earned degrees at 3 different central Illinois universities. Her best teacher has been her son, Jim, as well as her many students over the years, whether they were elementary age or at the university level. Currently, these wonderful EIU student helpers that hang out with Jim on campus deeply enrich her family's lives, as well as, keep her grounded as to what is important for students to learn as future teachers. She continues to strive to be the ordinary person interpretating her exceptional lived experience in concept-free discourse.
