Research Interests

I am a historian of the 19th century United States, and I specialize in the broad Civil War era, the memory of the Civil War in American culture, and American women's history. My book on the women of abolitionist John Brown's history, "the tie that bound us": The Brown Women and Radical Antislavery, will be forthcoming from Cornell University Press in fall of 2013.  I am working on an article about John Brown's children in southern California in the late 19th century and about how their lives intersected with memory of the Civil War.  As a former high school teacher, I am also excited to be working with students interested in teacher certification in history and the social sciences.
