HERC Substance Intervention Services

HERC provides resources for EIU students who are in need of help for their substance use. We have created several programs based upon current research findings which indicate effectiveness of reducing high-risk substance use in college students. Programs are confidential.

Checkup to Go (1 session) Checkup to Go is already in use by 71 universities and colleges across 23 states. It is an electronic brief assessment and feedback tool designed to reduce drinking or marijuana use among college students. Checkup to Go is designed to motivate students to reduce their consumption using personalized information about their own drinking and risk factors. The feedback includes information that has been shown to be particularly motivating to college drinkers. It is an online survey that is completely confidential and does not identify any student by name. It takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It asks questions about use of alcohol, attitudes about alcohol, and provides the student with instant feedback on the available resources on the EIU campus to assist in healthy decisions about alcohol. This is free to EIU Students.

BASICS (2 Sessions) Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) is a prevention program for college students who drink alcohol heavily and have experienced or are at risk for alcohol-related problems. BASICS is a harm reduction approach to motivate students to reduce alcohol use in order to decrease the negative consequences of drinking. It is delivered over the course of two 1-hour interviews with a feedback profile taken by the student after the first session. This is free to EIU students.

CASICS (2 Sessions) Cannabis Screening and Intervention for College Students (CASICS) are two, one-on-one sessions, typically one week apart. CASICS is delivered over the course of 2 sessions and takes approximately 60 minutes. Students review the feedback profile with the facilitator and, if appropriate, identify potential changes that could work to help reduce their risk for developing future alcohol- or marijuana-related problems. This is free to EIU students.
