Dear Prospective H.A. Student:

Thank you for your interest in the Historical Administration Program at EIU. Housed in the History Department, our students receive an M.A. in History with Historical Administration Option.

Each year we welcome about ten students into our program. Successful applicants have museum experience and a strong academic record. The application process is tiered—candidates for interviews are chosen from among all of our applicants, and offers for admission are made following interviews in early March.

We are generally able to offer financial assistance to most or all of our students in the form of graduate assistantships or a scholarship. All of our graduate assistantships come with a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. (The guide to institutional costs is available here: http://www.eiu.edu/finaid/cost.php)

The H.A. Program is an intensive two-semester course of study, followed by a six-month internship. Our strength lies in preparing students as generalists, ready to step into the work of museums and historical agencies in a number of capacities. Over the course of the academic year, students examine the historical, theoretical, and philosophical underpinnings of applied practice, and complete numerous projects in which they demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the interaction of the applied and the abstract.

Our alumni are testament to the excellence of the preparation we offer. You will find them throughout the nation, and in Canada, England, and Mexico, working as registrars, collections managers, curators, archivists, exhibit designers, development officers, museum educators, directors, and more, in institutions large and small. They form an impressive professional network.

Our application deadline is February 1. We look forward to hearing from you.
