Catalog Description

The Professional Science Master’s program provides advanced training in the Geographic Information Sciences while at the same time developing skills in business that are highly valued by employers. Our program delivers geospatial courses in the fundamentals of GIScience and remote sensing, spatial analysis and statistics, GIS programming and geodatabase management. A small program size encourages the professional development of students by ensuring mentoring with faculty from the departments of Geology/Geography, Biological Sciences, Economics, Political Science, Business, and Technology.

The PSM in GISci prepares graduates to address the documented local and regional workforce needs in business, government, and non-profit sectors. Graduates with a GISci background can find employment in a variety of careers related to natural resource conservation, urban studies, demographic analysis, economic location analysis, public works, weather/climate forecasting, environmental studies, disaster response, military, regional planning or archaeology, just to name a few. Geographic Information Science is a powerful tool, applied by researchers in diverse disciplines.

The PSM degree program includes a business component and internship requirement designed to provide professional project management and budgeting skills needed to succeed in the workforce. EIU also offers graduate degree programs with a GIScience component in technology, business administration and public planning, as well as a GIScience Certificate that serves graduate students in Biology and other disciplines.

Admission to the PSM in GiSci requires an application to The Graduate School and submission of the following additional materials:

  • A statement of background/purpose
  • Three letters of recommendation

The statement and recommendation letters may be sent directly to the PSM Degree Coordinator by e-mail:
