Welcome to the Department of Geology/Geography website! We are glad you have an interest in our offerings here at Eastern Illinois University!
On this page, you find the programs we offer undergraduate students. Be sure to follow the links to learn more about what the program entails and the exciting courses you might enjoy. If you are unsure Geology or Geography is right for you, give one of our freshman courses a whirl during your first or second semester at EIU. You never know how much you may enjoy them unless you try them. These courses do count for general education credit. Geology and geography can be intermixed with many other fields at EIU. Therefore, if you want to major in Economics, add a minor in Geography, Geology, or Geographic Information Sciences. Can't give up history? Add geography (many historians became geographers in the late 19th century and early 19th century). Enjoy biology? Take on a major or minor in Geology to enhance your potential career in environmental studies. There are many other disciplines that can be intertwined with Geology and/or Geography.
- Cultural Geography (GEG 1100)
- World Regional Geography (GEG 1200)
- Introduction to Earth Science (ESC 1300)
- Weather & Climate (ESC 1400)
- Historical Geology (GEL 1430)
If geology or geography, or both, is the major you select, you will be able to take advantage of our Integrative Learning opportunities that will put you above the rest of those seeking jobs in the same field. Our classes are small in number in order to provide students a better chance to work with our professors and instructors. We have state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment that are essential to the future career path our students will take. The department works with several local businesses and governments to provide paid internships during the semester or summer months increasing the employment potential after graduation. Best of all, we offer scholarships for students who excel in their particular areas of study.
Our mission is to provide an exceptional Integrative Learning experience and work with our students in preparing for their future in the private or public sectors of geology/geography.
