The Department of Geology/Geography at the present time offers its majors eight (8) scholarships and awards based on their academic and extracurricular accomplishments and activities and personal attributes. The department’s emeritus faculty, friends, and supporters have established these scholarships. The funds for these awards are managed by the University Foundation (a fund raising unit of the University). Each year in the spring semester, committees of department faculty recommend recipients to the department chair chosen on the basis of each scholarship’s criteria. The department chair, in turn, prepares relevant documents and recommends the recipients to the Foundation, which ensures the accuracy of procedures followed, and issues the certificate and monetary value of awards to each recipient. The recipients are recognized at a senior banquet at the end of the spring semester. The following are the criteria for each award.

Department of Geology/Geography Internships

In order for our students to gain experience working in the “real world” before they graduate, the Department of Geology/Geography has internship programs with various federal, state, and local agencies. The Illinois Board of Higher Education allocates funds to state colleges and universities in order that their funding might be matched by a sponsoring agency. This past academic year the board allocated Eastern Illinois University $90,000 in the form of Cooperative Work Grant that was then distributed among various departments on campus. Thanks in large measure to the efforts of the department’s Internship Coordinator, Dr. Vince Gutowski, and the strong academic background of our students; the Department of Geology/Geography received the largest allocation in the university. This meant that our internship program was able to place 14 different students during the fall, spring, and summer sessions. Students worked in five different sponsoring agencies. As part of their internships, students receive academic credit and pay, which a $8/hour averaged out to a little over $1,300/student this past academic year! We currently have internship programs with the following agencies and companies:

The Illinois State Geological Survey
Coles County Regional Planning
Effingham Equity
Village of Downers Grove
City of Charleston
Weaver, Boos and Gordon, Incorporated
