Crystal Duncan Lane is an Assistant Professor in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences at Eastern Illinois University. She began in this position in August 2012. Her current research interests include the exploration of family resilience in terms of family health. Specifically, Dr. Duncan Lane is interested in studying the relationships of women experiencing breast cancer, understanding the lived experience of women in Stage IV breast cancer, and the impact of cell/smart phones on the classroom.. Dr. Duncan Lane also explores instrumentation, namely the accurate measurement of family resilience and of family-level phenomena.


Prior to coming to EIU, Dr. Duncan Lane served in a Post Doctorate joint-position as the Program Manager for the Appalachian Information Technology Extension Services (AITES) Project and as the STEM Coordinator for the Institute for Critical Technologies and Applied Sciences, both at Virginia Tech.  Dr. Duncan Lane received her doctorate in Human Development from Virginia Tech in 2011 with a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies. Prior to her doctoral work, Dr. Duncan Lane served as Grant Administrator in the Department of Family Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. While there she completed a post-master’s fellowship in Interdisciplinary Rural Health and served as adjunct faculty with the Early Childhood Education program at Mount Olive College. Dr. Duncan Lane earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Psychology from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from East Carolina University. As part of her master’s graduate program, she completed a dual internship at the Walter B. Jones Alcohol, Drug, Addiction Treatment Center and Eastern Surgical Associates, Inc. Dr. Duncan Lane has been a Certified Family Life Educator with the National Council on Family Relations since 2001.  She is a native of southwest Virginia and loves spending time with her husband James and their cats, Mercury and Gemini.
