The Faculty Mentoring program has been designed to assist new faculty in making the transition to full-time academic work and a career at Eastern. Mentor and mentee are matched at the beginning of the year. Once introduced, they decide how often to meet as well as the kind of support the mentee would like to be given. The purpose is to provide opportunities for new faculty to form relationships with existing faculty and to develop social networks outside of their home departments.

Mentors meet individually with new faculty or even more established faculty as requested and agreed upon by Mentor and Mentee. At the end of each academic year, we try to bring together all those who have participated in mentoring for a brief reflection. The Faculty Development and Innovation Center distributes a Faculty Mentoring Booklet to all mentors. The office also maintains several copies of related works: Larry Ambrose, A Mentor’s Companion(Chicago: Perrone-Ambrose, 1998); Susan L. Phillips, Susan T. Dennison, and Milton D. Cox,Faculty Mentoring: A Practical Manual for Mentors, Mentees, Administrators, and Faculty Developers(Sterling, VA: Stylus Publishing, 2015);The Mentoring Field Guide: Workbook for A Mentor’s Companion (Chicago: Perrone-Ambrose, 2000). We also provide The Mentor’s Pocket Prompter; and/or The Mentor’s Bookmark to all new mentors (as long as our supply lasts!).
