The emphasis in this course will be on memoirs written by women in English during the last fifty years. The purpose of the course is to allow students to explore various themes that women writers of memoir have undertaken as well as the different forms and stylistic devices they have utilized in their writing. Among the memoirs to be discussed are Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, by Alexandra Fuller; The Liar’s Club, by Mary Karr; and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou. Students will write two short essays (one of which may be a creative nonfiction work) and one longer paper using outside sources. (Group 5)
