Victorian Literature    0800-0850 MWF

This section of English 3807 will attempt to place Victorian literature in a wider cultural and social context. We will examine several works of non-fictional prose, fiction and poetry to see how the Victorians perceived their world and to note their beliefs about distinctions of wealth, class and gender. We will read works by such authors as Thomas Carlyle, Alfred Tennyson, John Ruskin, John Newman, John Stuart Mill, Harriet Taylor Mill, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Matthew Arnold, Florence Nightingale, Charles Dickens, Charlotte Brontë, George Gissing and George Eliot. Course requirements include oral reports, two papers, reading responses, a midterm and a final.  In addition, groups of students will be responsible for leading class discussion on novels. (Group 3B)
