American Multicultural Literatures: Complicating Social Justice     1300-1350 MWF

Avtar Brah and Ann Phoenix argue that contemporary understandings of race, ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status provide an interconnected and unstable foundation from which to analyze and understand social justice. Taking Brah and Phoenix’ argument as our theoretical frame, this course will examine the ways American multicultural literatures address social justice and human rights concerns. Readings will include novels, short fiction, and poetry; requirements include three exams, regular written responses to readings, two research projects (one short in-class presentation and one seminar paper), and regular engagement in class participation.
