Miss Black EIU Pageant helps cap month of events on campus

All month, a conglomerate of EIU offices/departments has observed African-American Heritage Month with its Evolution to Revolution: Different Shades of Black event series. As the end of February draws near, however, there’s still time to make plans to attend one of the month’s premier events.

The 42nd Annual Miss Black EIU Scholarship Pageant will be contested Saturday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the Martin Luther King Jr. University Union. Advance tickets for the event, which is followed by a dance in McAfee Gymnasium, are $8 and went on sale today.

Entrants in the Miss Black EIU pageant are slated to compete in a quartet of categories:

  • Creative Expression
  • African Garment
  • Talent
  • Impromptu Q&A w/Evening Gown

Since its inception in 1971, this pageant has provided a cultural experience for the women who participate as well as those who attend. Over the years, it has facilitated a sense of pride, appreciation and cultural awareness for the many women who have accepted the challenge of competing for the crown and the honor of representing Eastern’s African-American community.

Black Student Union is the sponsor of this event; a full listing of Evolution to Revolution supporters, as well as a full listing of the month’s events, is available here, while additional ticket information and full details of Saturday’s pageant and dance are available here.
