Summer Buzz

Most of EIU's students might be gone for the summer, but the energy on campus has never left!

Summer on a college campus. You’d have every right to assume it’s a pretty dull time; after all, the bulk of the student population is spread out across the globe until it’s time to return for the fall semester! Eastern Illinois University, however, is anything but boring during the summer months!

As of this writing …

  • Junior high softball camps are in full swing at Williams Field, while youth soccer, basketball, and track/field camps are just around the corner in addition to volleyball and baseball events scheduled for July.
  • Lantz Arena is adorned with an enormous United States flag and enough chairs for around 500 participants in the 82nd Annual Illinois Premier Boys State program taking place on campus.
  • Despite the June heat, hundreds of talented high school musicians can be found braving the mid-afternoon sun in and around O’Brien Stadium as the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps pays its annual visit to Charleston in preparation for its summer touring schedule.
  • And don’t forget all the incoming freshman heading to campus for New Student Programs orientation events!

… and that’s just a taste of the broad range of activities you’ll find taking place at EIU throughout the “slow” months of summer! More than 10,000 guests visit our campus each summer to take part in a number of programs designed to “promote academic, athletic, cultural, artistic and educational experiences” for the youth who participate in them.

We could take the time here to list the ample and diverse offerings you’ll find here every summer, but our Camps and Conferences Services office has already taken care of that for us! Make sure to check out their website, and the video above, to get a feel for the exciting atmosphere surrounding summers at EIU!
