Programs of Study
Master's and Specialist programs are offered on-campus with a significant number of courses being offered each semester. Cohort programs are currently being offered in Champaign (Parkland), Danville, Decatur, Mt. Vernon, Olney, Pontiac, and Vandalia. These programs are limited to students admitted with permission of the Department and the local Regional Offices of Education.
Master's of Science in Educational Administration provides the necessary coursework for securing the Illinois Type 75 General Administrative Certificate. The program is designed to meet the requirement for becoming a principal, dean, and/or building or central office administrator. In addition to successful completion of the program, a student must have an Illinois Teaching or School Service Personnel Certificate with at least two years of full-time teaching or school service personnel experience and must successfully complete the Illinois General Administration Certification Test and Basic Skills Test in order to complete the certification requirement for their Illinois Type 75 certficate.
Master's of Science in Education Degree in Educational Administration* is a 36-semester-hour program. The required coursework is as follows:

* A minimum of 36 semester hours is required for the degree. All hours included in a student's plan of study MUST be within a 6-year time limit preceding receipt of the degree. At least 21 hours must be from EIU. Careful choice of coursework will allow for Illinois Administration Certification. A minimum of 2 years experience as a certified teacher, counselor, psychologist, social worker, or nurse and successful completion of the Illinois Administrative Competency Exam and Basic Skills Test are all required for Illinois Certification.

Specialist Degree in Educational Administration provides the necessary coursework for graduates to secure the Illinois State Board of Education Certification to be a Superintendent of Schools. In addition to successful completion of the program, two years of full-time administrative experience and successful completion of the Illinois Superintendent Certification Test are required for certification.
Specialist in Education Degree in Educational Administration requires a minimum of 33 semester hours above the Master's Degree.

- If the Master's Degree was not earned in Educational Administration AND the student does not have a Type 75 certificate students will need to complete the additional prerequisite courses below:

- If student has a M.S. and a Type 75 Certification then only the 6000 level courses must be taken for Ed.S. (33 hours minimum, 64 hours total); if student has a M.S. but no Type 75 then all 5000 and 6000 level or equivalent must be taken. A minimum of 33 semester hours above a Master's degree is required for the Specialist degree. All hours included in a student's plan of study must be within a 6-year time limit preceding receipt of the degree. The Ed.S. Degree, two years of Administration/Supervision experience, successful completion of the Illinois Superintendent Test and Basic Skills Test are required for Illinois Superintendent's endorsement.
