Student Activities - Graduate Students Attend MVEA Conference

In the Fall of 2005, A chart topping 7 graduate students went to Kansas City MO to attend the Missouri Valley Economic Association Conference from October 27th through October 30th. Professors Linda Ghent, Eric Hake and Mukti Upadhyay accompanied Kyle Baumgartner, Chris Cole, Fassil Fanta, Katie Fischer, Erik Pizer, Tammy Velkova, Bogdan Stanciu and Tammy Velkova.

In addition to the conference sessions, the students had time to visit the KC Plaza, apparently more than one smoky Jazz club, and share several great dinners with the faculty.

Two graduate students presented research papers at the conference.  Fassil Fanta presented a paper based on joint research with Professor Mukti Upadhyay, while Erik Pizer presented an early version of a paper on high school academic performance and part time employment that ultimately formed the core of his graduate thesis, defended in the Fall 2005 under the advisement of Dr. Linda Ghent.

This is the fifth consecutive year the Department of Economics has sponsored this trip for graduate students to the MVEA meetings.  In past years, the conference has been held in other cities including Memphis, Nashville, and St. Louis.  Along with the annual Chicago Financial Institutions Field Trip, the MVEA trip is another chance for our students to work closely with the Economics faculty, get a better feel for what economists do, and broaden their horizons beyond the classroom. The trip is partially funded through the generosity of Economics Alumni who make contributions to the department during our annual Telefund Drive.
