VAIHCS provides primary and secondary healthcare services to Veterans residing in central Illinois and west central Indiana. Inpatient services are available in acute and sub-acute Internal Medicine, Ambulatory Surgery and Psychiatry. Community Living Centers provides a skilled care environment with special focus on rehabilitation, dementia and Alzheimer’s care, geri-psychiatric care, palliative care and extended care. A full cadre of ambulatory care services is offered including primary care, ambulatory surgery, mental health, substance abuse and specialty care. The parent facility is located in Danville, Illinois. The population of veterans in VAIHCS service area is approximately 147,000. VAIHCS is a part of VA Network 11, which includes facilities in Michigan (Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Detroit, and Saginaw), Indiana (Indianapolis, and Northern Indiana) and Danville.

Teaching and Education

Danville VAMC continues its affiliations with U of I and several other allied health care professional training.


Food Service Management

A variety of experiences is offered in the following areas:

  • Patient menu is a select 3 week cycle that is computerized and offers many patient preferences
  • Patients are fed utilizing an Advanced Meal Delivery System
  • Management- Become familiar with government system. Work with the Assistant and Chief, Nutrition & Food Service, Food Service Supervisors and Food Service Workers to gain a variety of experience.

Clinical Rotations

A comprehensive experience is provided through:

  • Inpatient care including med/surgery, psychiatry, Nutrition Support, and Community Living Centers (CLC-nursing home style)
  • Outpatient counseling including Diabetes, Hyperlipidemia, weight loss, GI disorders, renal disease, and healthy eating with Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) dietitians and MOVE! (weight reduction program) and Tele-MOVE! Dietitians.
  • Community service including Home Based Primary Care and Community Based Clinics.

The clinical staff includes 13 staff dietitians with a clinical nutrition manager with 7 at the Danville facility and 6 at the CBOC clinics.
