St James Hospital and Health Centers 

St. James Hospital and Health Centers consists of two campuses: Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields. It is a non-profit hospital that has been providing care since it first opened it’s doors in 1911. It has a combined acute bed total of 351 that is growing with each new edition that is being added to the Olympia Fields Campus. The hospital is part of a system that includes hospitals throughout Indiana:   Dyer, Hammond, Michigan City, Beech Grove, Mooresville, Indianapolis, Crown Point, and Crawfordsville.

Each campus is provides services in some areas, but they also have their own unique services. St. James Hospital and Health Centers is the primary teaching hospital for medical students, interns and residents from Midwestern University, Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. It is also a Heart and Vascular Wellness Center along with a Comprehensive Cancer Institute that is unique to the area.

The primary mission of the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services, INC. is to continue Christ’s ministry in our Franciscan Tradition.

Chicago Heights and Olympia Fields

The hospital is situated in the south suburbs of Chicago, where there are vast opportunities for entertainment. There are many different housing options in the area. The distance between the two hospitals is approximately 5 to 8 miles.


Food Service Management

A variety of experiences are offered in the following areas: 

  • Food and Nutrition Services serves the patients, visitors, and employees of the hospital.
  • There is a 7-day cycling menu for the patients, with the opportunity for the patient to choose their own menu for each day.
  • The cafeteria offers a wide variety of menu selections. 
  • Catering services are provided with a wide range of choices for people to choose from. 
  • The staff includes: foodservice director, foodservice supervisors, registered dietitians, purchasing agent, retail financial manager and foodservice associates.

Clinical Rotations

A comprehensive experience in all aspects of clinical nutrition is provided through: 

  • Inpatient care including critical care, medical/surgical, maternal/child, pediatric, adult care, wound care, oncology, and cardiovascular care.
  • Outpatient counseling includes, but not limited to weight loss/weight gain, GI disorders, and healthy eating. These are provided through the community dietitian.
  • The Diabetes Center covers all aspects of diabetes education and also runs clinical trials on new and upcoming medications.
  • There are many opportunities for programs within the hospital and in the community
  • The Olympia Fields hospital is a Level I Trauma Center, which provides unique learning opportunities.

The clinical staff between both campuses includes four full-time and one part-time Registered Dietitians, and one part-time Registered Dietetic Technician.

The staff at the Diabetes Center includes two full time Registered Dietitians, and a Diabetes Research Coordinator.
