Carle Foundation Hospital & Carle Clinic Association

Carle Foundation Hospital is a 345-bed facility, located in Urbana, Illinois, with more than 30 departments including surgical, cardiac and neurological intensive care units, a Level III Prenatal Center and the region’s Level 1 Trauma Center. Carle also serves as the primary teaching hospital for the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine. The hospital is accredited by DNV Healthcare Inc. (Det Norske Veritas); a provider of hospital accreditation, infection risk management and standards development. Carle Foundation is the non-for profit parent company of a network of integrated healthcare services. The Carle Foundation is comprised of Carle Foundation Hospital, Health Alliance Medical Plans and Carle Physician Group. Carle Physician Group, one of the largest private physician groups in the United States, is comprised of more than 400 physicians practicing in more than 80 specialties and located in 14 communities across Central Illinois.

A Brief History

In 1918, Margaret B. Carle Morris left $40,000 to the city of Urbana to help establish a hospital. Others donated the land, time and energy to make her dream a reality. From that original gift of $40,000 almost a hundred years ago, Carle Physician Group and Carle Foundation Hospital have grown to become one of the largest healthcare providers in Illinois. Carle continues to grow and serve the health care needs of communities throughout central Illinois and beyond.

Mission

Carle is dedicated to serving people through high quality care, medical research and education. Whether it's through our branch clinics, Level 1 Trauma Center, Mills Breast Cancer Institute, Carle Hoopeston Regional Medical Center, Arrow Ambulance, or Health Systems Research Center; Carle is working every day to meet and exceed our mission. The people who work at Carle dedicate themselves to the highest level of patient care and commit themselves to serving the needs of our community.

Food Service Management

The mission of the Food Service Department at Carle Foundation Hospital is to satisfy the nutritional needs of their customers with a commitment to quality and service. Although the primary focus is on the patient food service, the department also provides food for a large number of special functions, for the hospital cafeteria, for the Carle Day Care Center, and for 3 area Head Start programs. The department employs 75 people and serves more than 1,247,170 meals a year for the patients alone.

Clinical Rotations

The Dietetic Internship at Carle offers experience in all areas of the department including food service management, clinical nutrition care and community nutrition. With Carle Physician Group's specialty areas, the clinical rotation includes a broad base of patient care experiences with a multidisciplinary approach. A strong emphasis on Nutrition Support is imperative for meeting adult and pediatric patients’ needs and provides a variety of teachable moments for dietetic interns.
