A Little Background
You may not realize it, but autism has probably touched the life of somebody you know. With an incidence of one in every 88 children, it is the most common developmental disorder. Early identification and intensive therapy typically help these children and their families overcome the educational challenges presented by autism, but this has proven an overwhelming task for our public school system to undertake alone.
That’s where the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences and Autism Center come in. Our accomplished faculty and staff provide evaluations and recommendations necessary to help educators best serve the academic needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorders, but our resources are limited. Therefore, so is the number of families we can serve. With your help, though, we can expand our operations. The wait time for families embarking on this journey with their child could be significantly reduced by further dedicating faculty expertise and university facilities to this initiative.

Statement of Need
The proposed Autism Center at Eastern Illinois University will offer the necessary resources to individuals with autism and their families, services they would otherwise have to travel to larger metropolitan areas to receive.
Donor support of the autism center will go directly toward providing the necessary personnel and resources to meet these evaluation and consultation needs, and this fundraising effort is designed to meet the first year’s start-up costs for personnel and services. Our long-term goal is to be self-supporting or break even in subsequent years.
