Big Man on Campus
Goal Oriented: Andre knew what he wanted once he got to campus. He set goals to get involved and meet new people while graduating with a 3.0 GPA. But his goals do not end there. In the future, he wants to attend graduate school to prepare for a career in higher education recruiting and help deprived kids succeed.
Involved on Campus: Andre is involved in a considerable amount of activities and organizations on EIU’s campus. Most importantly, he is the President of the Black Student Union, a recognized student organization at EIU. He also works for Eastern’s WEIU station where he gets the word out about activities on campus.
Knew EIU was for him: Andre knew EIU and its community were a good fit for him from the start. He enjoyed the small campus, which allowed him to be closer and more involved with other students. Eastern’s affordability provided another reason for Andre to enroll. Finally, the proximity to home set in stone that Charleston, Ill., was the right environment for him.
Prepared for the Future: Andre is a communication studies major with a business administration minor. He is confident that these areas of study will prepare him for his future. Interesting classes are one of the main reasons he loves communication. Andre says, “There are so many tactics of communicating that we use today without even knowing it!” He also believes that communication skills are central for every professional to get business done. Finally, Andre enjoys that his areas of study create a wide variety of job opportunities for him.
Development: Through his classes and involvement on campus, Andre has gained an assortment of important skills. As president of the Black Student Union he has, for instance, trained his public speaking skills when he participated on a student panel to help prospective students make a decision about their future university. He has also been able to strengthen his leadership, listening skills, and problem-solving skills.
Advice for incoming students: Andre has some advice for incoming students. He says that it is important to remember and know what you came to school for. “Get good grades early and don’t get behind, because it makes school so much harder when you are trying to catch up.” Finally, Andre wished he had utilized even more of EIU’s resources like the Career Services and gotten more involved with Eastern’s Greek Life.
