Sammie Hough

First Generation Student and Event Planner of the Future

Entering college is exciting for anyone – but for Sammie Hough, it was extra special. Sammie was the first person in her family to go to college! Today, Sammie is a junior at EIU and is majoring in corporate communication with a minor in public relations. Ironically, communication studies was not her first choice. Sammie was originally interested in business management. However, after taking a few classes, she found that it was not the right fit for her and consulted with EIU’s Career Services. After discussing her interests with them, she decided that she would switch to communication studies.

There are multiple qualities that make her a good candidate for communication studies. Sammie is a people person with outstanding communication skills. She is outgoing, organized, and open minded. This is a huge plus for a student who aspires to become a successful event planner.

Being a first generation student motivates her. Her parents often pushed her to succeed and get a better education than they received. With a bachelor degree, she is sure that she will find a job that she is passionate about. She is grateful that her parents pushed her as hard as they did.

Eastern has been a great experience for Sammie and opened many doors. Last summer, she shadowed at the City Hall in Chicago for a day. She helped set up “Bike to Work Week,” which is an event that promotes biking to work over driving. Career Services helped her get the opportunity.

After graduating, Sammy plans to start working on a steady career immediately. Sammie does not want to be bouncing from job to job for the rest of her life. Her ideal job is to be an event planner for a resort. Sammie is especially looking forward to planning and organizing nightlight events. In ten years, she hopes to be making more money than her husband.

Sammie has a good head on her shoulders and is going to do well as an event planner. Her skills will take her far in the industry – let Sammie be the one to plan your events!
