Faculty member and alumni earn praise for theatre performance

A Communication Studies faculty member and two alumni performed in a recent community theatre production in Charleston.
Rich Jones portrayed Father Flynn in John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize winning play Doubt: A Parable. The play was produced through Charleston Community Theatre and ran for two weekends at Tarble Arts Center. The Mattoon Journal Gazette-Charleston Times Courier and Daily Eastern News praised the show's cast and crew in their reviews.
The show is set in a Catholic school in the Bronx, NY, 1964 and the plot revolves around themes of doubt and certainty as Sister Aloysius, the principal of the school, suspects the young priest of having an inappropriate relationship with the school's first African American student.
Jones was active in community theatre in high school and college in North Carolina and studied communication as performance in his doctoral program at the University of Denver. The content of the play also closely ties to Rich's research interests in the performance of identities, including gender, race, and sexuality.
The play also featured Agnes Amarh (below left), who received her B.A. in Communication Studies at EIU, as Mrs. Muller, and Rachel Z. Fisher (below, 3rd from left), who received her M.A. in Communication Studies at EIU, as Sister James.
