Student Awards and Scholarships

The College of Sciences has several awards and scholarships that are awarded to students. Due dates can be found on the Applications and Forms page. (Additional EIU scholarships may be listed in the Official Notices.)

Scholarships

Gerardo J. Solis Scholarship (Apply)

Scholarship applications are due in the spring and the award will be made the following fall.

  • Latino/Latina heritage.
  • Full time undergraduate student in a degree program within the College of Sciences.
  • Have completed at least 48 semester hours at EIU.
  • Good academic standing.
  • Continued enrollment at EIU.

 

Myerscough and Pfeffinger Scholarship (Apply)

This award alternates between the College of Sciences (even-numbered years) and the College of Education and Professional Studies (odd-numbered years). Applications are also available in the appropriate Dean's office.

  • Junior or senior standing.
  • Member in good standing of Sigma Pi.

 

Eunice W. Dougherty Scholarship (Apply)

Scholarship will be awarded the following fall.

  • Have completed at least 15 semester hours at EIU and 60-89 semester hours total.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.85.
  • Continued enrollment at EIU.

 

Lewis T. White Memorial Scholarship (Apply)

The scholarship shall be selected in the spring and payable one-half the following fall semester and one-half the following spring semester. Financial need is not a consideration for this scholarship. The recipient(s) may be eligible to apply for, and receive, the award again provided she/he continues to meet the criteria.

  • Have graduated from Charleston High School.
  • Full-time undergraduate student majoring in mathematics or science during both fall and spring semesters.

 

Patricia Stal Markowski Science Scholarship (Apply)

Scholarship will be awarded the following fall. Recipient may be eligible to apply for, and receive, the award again (maximum of twice) if she/he continues to meet the criteria.

  • Full-time undergraduate student majoring in chemistry, nursing, physics or biological sciences.
  • Good academic standing and/or at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Continued enrollment at EIU.

 

William E. Adams Memorial Scholarship (Apply)

Must apply in the Spring semester and the scholarship will be awarded in the Fall semester.

  • Must be a full-time student, minoring in Pre-law, accepted to Eastern Illinois University
  • If Pre-law is not a curriculum option, then the recipient must be a full-time student    majoring in History.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 3.00
  • Financial need shall be a consideration

 

COS Advisory Board Award

  • Full-time junior, senior or graduate student.
  • Have completed at least 15 semester hours in a COS program of study.
  • Students must have a faculty member submit the faculty recommendation.

 

Student Assistance Award

Financial need is a consideration for this award. The recipient may be eligible to apply for and receive the award again provided she/he continues to meet the criteria stated.

  • Must be facing or have overcome some sort of hardship that has impacted the student's college career.
  • Full-time sophomore or higher majoring in a COS academic program.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Students must have a faculty member submit the faculty recommendation.

 

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Travel and Research Grants

Travel Grant | Research Grant | Summer Research Grant

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Travel Grants were established to provide travel support for College of Science majors who have papers or creative works accepted for presentation at regional, state, national, or international conferences during Fall, Spring, or Summer terms. COS Undergraduate and Graduate Research Grants provide funds for students conducting research. These funds may be used for supplies and/or travel related to the student research. Both of these grants are for reimbursement of documented expenses up to $500. Grants will be made based on the quality of the application. A contribution from the candidate's department is encouraged.

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Summer Research Grants are available to help support students conducting research with faculty members during the Summer semester.

 

Scholars in Undergraduate Research at Eastern Award

The SURE program fosters undergraduate research participation in COS. Undergraduate involvement in research with mentoring professors is a rewarding experience for students. The goal of the SURE program is to facilitate research activities through an incentive program for students.

The SURE awards are given to undergraduate students in their junior or senior years. Students are encouraged to present their research in a professional setting (a local or state conference, student association/club meeting or classes).

 

Graduate Student Investigator Award

The Graduate Student Investigator Award (GSI) program was developed by the Dean of the College of Sciences to support graduate research and to provide a forum for the presentation of superior graduate student research.

 

Social Science Writing Award

The Departments of Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology-Anthropology of Eastern Illinois University invite students to participate in the Annual Social Science Writing Awards competition. Regardless of major, undergraduate students who write research papers as a regular assignment in all social science courses may submit them for recognition and one of the cash awards.
