The College of Sciences has several opportunities that are available to students. Please read each of these carefully for their specific rules and eligibility requirements. Click on the individual scholarships, awards, or grants to apply or to find out more information.

Scholarships

William E. Adams Memorial Scholarship

Must apply in the Spring semester and the scholarship will be awarded in the Fall semester.
  • Must be a full-time student, minoring in Pre-law, accepted to Eastern Illinois University.
  • If Pre-law is not a curriculum option, then the recipient must be a full-time student majoring in History.
  • Must have an overall GPA of 3.0.
  • Financial need shall be a consideration.
  • Applications due February 26, 2016.

COS Advisory Board Scholarship

Student Application  |  Faculty Recommendation
 
Scholarship will be awarded the following Fall semester.
  • Full-time junior, senior, or graduate student.
  • Have completed at least 15 semester hours in a COS program of study.
  • Continued enrollment at EIU.
  • Both the student and faculty forms must be submitted for a complete application.
  • Applications due February 15, 2016.

Dr. Harold M. and Alice D. Cavins Scholarship Fund

Scholarship will be awarded the following Fall semester.
  • Must be a declared major in health-related field.
  • Must be a Junior, Senior, or EIU Graduate student.
  • Have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Display an integrity of character and demonstrated willingness to be of service to the community.
  • Applications due February 26, 2016.

Eunice W. Dougherty Scholarship

Scholarship will be awarded the following Fall semester.
  • Have completed at least 15 hours at EIU and 60-89 hours total.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.85.
  • Continued enrollment at EIU.
  • Applications due March 23, 2016.

Margaret and Walter Lowell Voluntary Scholarship Fund

Scholarship will be awarded the following Fall semester.
  • Must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior with at least one semester of residence at EIU and currently enrolled.
  • Must have offered substantial volunteer service in local community(ies)
  • Applications due February 26, 2016.

Patricia Stal Markowski Science Scholarship

Scholarship will be awarded the following Fall semester. Recipient may be eligible to apply for, and receive, the award again (maximum of twice) if he/she continues to meet the criteria.
  • Full-time undergraduate student majoring in chemistry, nursing, physics, or biological sciences.
  • Good academic standing and/or at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Continued enrollment at EIU.
  • Applications due February 26, 2016.

Myerscough and Pfeffinger Service Award

This award alternates between the College of Sciences (even-numbered years) and the College of Education and Professional Studies (odd-numbered years).
  • Junior or senior standing.
  • Member in good standing of Sigma Pi.
  • Applications due February 26, 2016.

Don and Ferne Rogers and Daughters Scholarship

This award alternates between the College of Sciences (even-numbered years) and the College of Education and Professional Studies (odd-numbered years).
  • Full-time student accepted to EIU.
  • Majoring in Elementary or Middle level Education w/ concentration in math or science OR Math with teacher certification OR Science with teacher certification
  • Minimum GPA of 2.65
  • Preference given to students actively employed in an effort to pay for their own education.
  • Financial need is a consideration.
  • Applications due to College of Education and Professional Studies for the 2015-2016 academic year. Please contact the CEPS Dean's Office for more information.

Gerardo J. Solis Scholarship

Scholarship applications are due in the Spring semester and will be awarded the following Fall semester.
  • Latino/Latina heritage.
  • Full-time undergraduate student in a degree program within the College of Sciences.
  • Have completed at least 48 hours at EIU.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 3.85.
  • Good academic standing.
  • Continued enrollment at EIU.
  • Applications due February 26, 2016.

Lewis T. White Memorial Scholarship

The scholarship winner shall be selected in the Spring semester and payable one-half the following Fall semester and one-half the following Spring semester.
  • A full-time student accepted to Eastern Illinois University
  • Academically talented student who graduated from Charleston High School, in Coles County, Charleston, IL
  • A declared major in the field of mathematics or science
  • Financial need is not a consideration
  • Applications due February 26, 2016.

Awards

Graduate Student Investigator Award - GSI

The Graduate Student Investigator Award (GSI) program was developed by the Dean of the College of Sciences to support graduate research and to provide a forum for the presentation of superior graduate student research.

Both the student and faculty forms must be submitted for a complete application.

Scholars in Undergraduate Research at Eastern Award - SURE

Student Application  |  Faculty Recommendation

The SURE program fosters undergraduate research participation in COS. Undergraduate involvement in research with mentoring professors is a rewarding experience for students. The goal of the SURE program is to facilitate research activities through an incentive program for students.

The SURE awards are given to undergraduate students in their junior or senior years. Students are encouraged to present their research in a professional setting (a local or state conference, student association/club meeting or classes).

Both the student and faculty forms must be submitted for a complete application.

Social Science Writing Award

Applications are submitted to the chairs of listed departments.

The Departments of Economics, Geology-Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology-Anthropology of Eastern Illinois University invite students to participate in the Annual Social Science Writing Awards competition. Regardless of major, undergraduate students who write research papers as a regular assignment in all social science courses may submit them for recognition and one of the cash awards.

Both the student and faculty forms must be submitted for a complete application.

COS Student Advisory Board Student Assistance Award

Financial need is a consideration for this award. The recipient may be eligible to apply for and receive the award again provided she/he continues to meet the criteria stated.

  • Must be facing or have overcome some sort of hardship that has impacted the student's college career.
  • Full-time sophomore or higher majoring in a COS academic program.
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Students must have a faculty member submit the faculty recommendation.
  • Applications due February 15, 2016.

COS Spring Commencement Speaker Competition 

A student speaker representing the College of Sciences will be featured during the Spring 2015 morning ceremony on Saturday, May 9, 2015.

To be eligible for the competition, students must submit an essay about the theme listed below, provide evidence from the degree audit that they will meet the requirements for graduation in the commencement ceremony they seek to represent, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher for courses completed at EIU at the time that they submit their materials for consideration.

The Essay Theme for this year is: The Things that Matter are the Things that Last: What educational experiences mattered to you while at Eastern Illinois University that made a difference and will follow you into your future?

GRANTS

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Student Travel Grant

Applications are submitted to the chair of your department for approval before being forwarded to the College of Sciences Dean's Office.

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Travel Grants were established to provide travel support for College of Science majors who have papers or creative works accepted for presentation at regional, state, national, or international conferences during Fall, Spring, or Summer terms. These funds may be used for travel related to the student's research. Grants will be made based on the quality of the application and availability of funds. A contribution from the candidate's department is encouraged.

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Student Research Grant

Applications are submitted to the chair of your department for approval before being forwarded to the College of Sciences Dean's Office.

COS Undergraduate and Graduate Research Grants provide funds for students conducting research. These funds may be used for supplies and/or travel related to the student's research. Grants will be made based on the quality of the application and availability of funds. A contribution from the candidate's department is encouraged.

  • All research money has been awarded for the 2014-2015 academic year.
