Teachers Share Common Core Strategies
Three hundred teachers, administrators, faculty and future educators came together to attend the Dive Into Common Core Showcase held at EIU’s Buzzard Hall on Wednesday, June 25, 2014. Representing all grade levels, the teachers came from over 40 districts throughout the east central Illinois region to hear teachers and EIU faculty give presentations about integrating common core standards into classroom curriculum. Kristen Holly, incoming principal at Carl Sandburg Elementary School in Charleston gave the keynote speech entitled, “Creating Curriculum in the Common Core Era.”
“The Showcase was an amazing afternoon! It demonstrated how teachers, administrators, university faculty and pre-service teachers can come together to share their expertise and learn from each other to help school children succeed,” said Dr. Joy Russell. “I was very proud to be part of the Showcase and to work with some of the best educators in the state.”
The showcase, made possible by a grant to EIU from the Illinois Board of Higher Education, was planned by a partnership of Charleston, Mattoon, and Effingham area schools; Regional Office #11; and Drs. Doug Bower, Joy Russell, and Stephen Lucas in the EIU College of Education and Professional Studies.
